Yay, like driving isnt already an expensive enough hobby.....
"List price" is only RRP, it can be more or less. But that is what the tax is based on.
What's to stop them listing everything under 40k, then telling the dealers to add a fixed premium/markup to the sale price?
It's only a hobby for those rich enough to afford chauffeurs... Round here, you don't get anywhere without a vehicle - No public transport and not even pavements.Yay, like driving isnt already an expensive enough hobby.....

Dealers could just classed that extra £15k as there own dealer tax..Can see it now, M3 and M4 prices down to £39,999 (but you have to pass another ~£15k in cash under the table)![]()
Why can't they just get rid of VED and put the price on at the pumps? That way use = expense. Use more, pay more. Or is that too logical?
This is my issue with the govt.'s constant attacks on motorists. They seem to be trying to push people onto the alternatives... Except that's not going to work, since for many people the alternatives are more expensive, inconvenient, uncomfortable and unreliable. It costs me ~£2.50 in petrol to get to work and back in 20-30mins. To take the train would take me an hour and a half, £10 a day and I'd need to arrive at work 30mins early to shower/change after riding my bike from the station. I wouldn't be able to carry anything with me that didn't fit in a backpack, and I'd be relying on the trains actually turning up on time (which they don't about 20% of the time).
Sure I'd save some of that ~£160/month difference on not paying tax/insurance/servicing, but if I wanted to travel anywhere else it would be further increased cost, e.g. fancy a spur of the moment day trip to the beach? £30-40 petrol vs £3-400 for on the day train tickets for the whole family...

About time - every car that uses fuel is bad and damages the planet (as well as every car with 4 wheels damages the infrastructure of the country but that's another argument). If you can afford a new car what's a few hundred quid extra. It's nice to see them heavily taxing the worst offenders. Will hopefully make people think more.
is right now the best time to buy a new car?
wife drives a aygo 2007 reg with has £20 a year tax.
should i upgrade to a 2016 model aygo now and still enjoy cheap or 0 tax?
Where do think the energy that is used to charge electric vehicles in the UK comes from?

Outside the town centre, it can be. Head South from J11, for example and it's still "Reading", but pretty much tractor territory.[TW]Fox;30411137 said:I didn't realise Reading was that bad![]()

Thing is though, Co2 is going to become less and less relevant as engines get cleaner. In maybe 10 years time it won't be a good way to tax people any more. Eventually everyone will be running under 100g/km which means most won't be paying any tax.
