Cartax - about time.

What's to stop them listing everything under 40k, then telling the dealers to add a fixed premium/markup to the sale price?

Can see it now, M3 and M4 prices down to £39,999 (but you have to pass another ~£15k in cash under the table) ;)

It's only a hobby for those rich enough to afford chauffeurs... Round here, you don't get anywhere without a vehicle - No public transport and not even pavements.

This is my issue with the govt.'s constant attacks on motorists. They seem to be trying to push people onto the alternatives... Except that's not going to work, since for many people the alternatives are more expensive, inconvenient, uncomfortable and unreliable. It costs me ~£2.50 in petrol to get to work and back in 20-30mins. To take the train would take me an hour and a half, £10 a day and I'd need to arrive at work 30mins early to shower/change after riding my bike from the station. I wouldn't be able to carry anything with me that didn't fit in a backpack, and I'd be relying on the trains actually turning up on time (which they don't about 20% of the time).

Sure I'd save some of that ~£160/month difference on not paying tax/insurance/servicing, but if I wanted to travel anywhere else it would be further increased cost, e.g. fancy a spur of the moment day trip to the beach? £30-40 petrol vs £3-400 for on the day train tickets for the whole family...

Yep, public transport is just not an option for most. It's slow, unreliable and since they privatised everything, more expensive than running a car.

Unfortunately the people making policies don't seem to be able to see beyond London. But now people are leaving jobs in London to take lower pay ones elsewhere, because the higher wages are wiped out by the commuting costs. Buying a house there is also out of the question unless your a millionaire. So when the MPs notice theres no one left to shine their shoes, maybe they will do something.

About time - every car that uses fuel is bad and damages the planet (as well as every car with 4 wheels damages the infrastructure of the country but that's another argument). If you can afford a new car what's a few hundred quid extra. It's nice to see them heavily taxing the worst offenders. Will hopefully make people think more.

Where do think the energy that is used to charge electric vehicles in the UK comes from?

If you have a 0 tax car now, then pretty much keep it forever :P

There will be a high demand for them in a few years time, guaranteed.

It comes from abroad. We have no coal industry any more and the Chinese own the nuclear solutions. But we do have some wind turbines and solar panels. ;)

We'll have fracking soon as well.

I'd expect electric cars to have solar panels on them to extend battery life to a realistic level.

Such an overly complicated system when there is no need for it to be. If they insist on keeping a tax system why not just reduce the Co2 levels which benefit from cheaper tax.

It's like someone was in charge of coming up with a new set of rules, but forgot so winged it in the government feasibility study and everyone fell for it.

Thing is though, Co2 is going to become less and less relevant as engines get cleaner. In maybe 10 years time it won't be a good way to tax people any more. Eventually everyone will be running under 100g/km which means most won't be paying any tax.

Except it would if the top band was anything over 50g/km and you got charged £500 for the privilege. It's not like the banding can't be adjusted as engines become cleaner

Also who said 0g/km has to be free.
