Press CTRL+ALT+DELETE, go to preformance and check your total physical memory value, you should have 1046960 or close if you have 1Gb. Whats the rest of your system?

Have i got 512mb ram or 1024, when i checked the physical memory it was 523568. That means that the two ram sticks i am using are incompatible right, as i am only using 1 of them?

Test them individually and see if one works and one doesn't. Changing their slots around might get them working too.
