Asking for a friend, you guys were awesome when I enquired about sorting my own out in the system forum so I'll try here again

Already has (at a glance)

500gb sata hdd
430w corsair modular
8gb ddr3 1600mhz memory kit (2x4gb)
HD 7750 2048mb
Gigabyte GA-H55M-S2 motherboard
Soundcard, bluray drive, monitor and pheripherals are covered

I stumbled across an unused
Akasa AK-CC7118HP01 K25 Low Profile CPU Cooler and let them have it, partially out of guilt, aside from that this thread is the only way I can help them out with this at the moment

Their looking for ;

Intel i5 CPU + Cooler (unless that akasa one will suffice) Although providing they don't do anything silly like trying to push the cpu without a proper cooler, they might get away with the intel stock one for a bit

I don't know what the situation is with that mboard other than its at least a couple years old by now, it supports i3/i5 I don't know if this applies to the newer/recent i3/i5 chips (like the i5 haswell) didn't have the time to match up the supported CPU list to whats here on OC

SSD drive
Basic 60gb for operating system and essential utilities
Larger one if its a good price and reliable, they have the 500 for storage already

A case / mid tower
(something simple like a Bit Merc? cooling options and Ok cabling management)

£300-£350 budget if the board they already have is usable (seems virtually brand new, its just a bit old)
£350-£400 budget for CPU, SSD, Case, and MB is they have to go for a newer one

Grab a used i5 750 and an SSD. job done. If needed, sell the 7750 and get something a bit more potent like a 7850.

Yes a 750 would work and be the cheapest addition but it won't last a lot longer if he is wanting to play current games.

As he has the money he may aswell upgrade now.

Makes sense here too, wouldn't have access to the MM anyhow (used the forum for donkeys years but not much of a spammer)

How about the cooler? Is it worth looking at a £20-30 range one or will they get away with the one I provided or the intel stock for now?

It depneds.

If its just internet and light usage it'll be fine but if they are going to be playing games (big games, BF3, The witcher 2, Skyrim and stuff like this) the CPU will get hot under the air cooler so a good £20-£30 is well worth it..
