Hey,

I'm looking to get some case fans to get my temps on my cpu (FX-55 Clawhammer) down which currently at around 49 Celsius max.

I'm most likely going to get a pair of Akasa Amber fans but am unsure at which size to get, I've measured the distance between the screw holes which comes to 8cm (80mm), so naturally I was thinking of buying a pair of 80mm fans.

I also noticed some space for fans in front of the case but there aren't any holes in the front of my case through which to draw air through, so it would be pointless to put any there.

Anyway I was wondering if I could get a second opinion on whether 80mm fans would be the best bet for my case or if I could fit larger fans.

Thanks in advance,

If you can fit larger fans then go for 120mm as these are generally very very quiet - especially if lower their speed a little!

Cases usually dictate what fans to fit by the grill sizes.
Don't be put off by the lack of air holes in the front just make some. Unscrew the front cover and do some DIY modding it's great fun :p
Ultimate air cooling is only achieved by having air drawn in the front and exhausted out the rear. How you cover up your hacking is down to personal choice.
I have 2x80's in the front and had to chop out an opening, i intend to frame up some speaker cover to pretty the front up again with blue LED's shining through the back. Not done yet though as i am to busy spamming or gaming (or to lazy).
A 120 takes care of the rear and my GFX is independantly exhausted by its own cooler.
Jobs a good'un.

As SiriusB says, you could get a mount adapter (80-120mm) for your CPU heatsink. You could always mod the rear 2x80mm mounts so that you can fit a 120mm fan there. You'd get better airflow and it'd be quieter.

Hi,

Thanks for the all suggestions, bought 2 80mm fans at my local PC shop and put them in the back, not too impressed so far, they just seem to blow cold air into the case with a bit coming out the back grill.

Might take them back tomorrow, they are like a no name brand Titan? Where only £3.00 each...lol...I promised myself I wouldn't buy stuff there again...

I could mod the front of my case, but for some reason the power button is like right in front of where the fans go.

What I need is a fan that sucks the hot air out of the case

Found a Akasa fan adapter on OCUK

Akasa AK-M1812-4 80mm - 120mm Fan Adapter - UV Blue (FG-022-BK)

Any good?

Thanks,

have now removed the fans I bought today, as they actually increased my temps to over 60 degrees when running spyware and virus scans

Lol, I just realized I must have mounted the fans the wrong way round, my bad day continues

Yep, you answered your own question. You mounted them the wrong way round :p

On the casing of the fan there should be two little arrows, one to show the direction of airflow and one to show the rotational direction of the blade. If there isn't then look at the fan and work out which way the blades will push the air, or you could connect them up without mounting them so that you can see the direction of airflow.

That akasa fan adapter should do the trick :)

I didn't bother re-mounting them, I brought them back this morning, will most likely buy a 120mm fan today + an adapter

Thanks again guys,

just had brain wave I could put a 120mm fan in my 2 empty 5.25" drive bays at the front of the case, interesting :D

should be good for airflow

I've tried putting a fan there before and it only fits a 80mm fan. You could try putting two 80mm ones side by side though. I used string to mount them in such a way that they were suspended in the air. This helped to reduce vibrations to the case.

yeah I measured it up and it has about 90mm's of vertical clearance, but I don't think there is enough space for two fans side by side only about 150mm's not really enough

installed the fans this morning about 5 degree drop in temps, impressed :)

now to get rid of my stock amd cooler...
