Case fan issue?

Before I go splash money on parts before I know what is going on. Turned PC on this morning and it was making a hum like a malevolent AI. Turns out the rear case fan is spinning up, then spinning down repeatedly.

Do we reckon this is just a fan issue, rather than anything more sinister? Just a standard fan that came with the LianLi case, so would be nice to splash out on a specialist fan if that what is wrong.

How is the fan connected to power? Could be the motherboard sending it varying voltages.

Fans are typically quite simple things. You give them voltage and enough current and they turn. If they are failing they normally have bearing noise before they finally expire. If they still sound smooth then the problem might be elsewhere other than the fan.

Hmm, directly connected to motherboard I believe. None of the other fans seem to be experiencing an issue.

God, I could do without the motherboard going as I've barely had the thing any time!

Try connecting the dodgy fan to a different header that works and see if it still has the same issue. If it does then just get a new fan. If it doesn't then don't use that fan header.
