case for 16 + hard drives

Im building something similar atm, im buying a 12 Bay Case Aluminium(5.25" Tower Cases ) for £89 and then im going to custom mount the HDD on there edge, fitting 4x3.5" drives in 3x 5.25" bays....

That looks like the best plan, if I can find the Supermicro hot swap bays then that would make it neat. I have one of the 4 hdd bays with a 120mm fan designed for the stacker cases, but the hot swap bays would look neater I think.

I had looked for the YY cube cases before, and just had another look now, but no one seems to sell them anymore.

I really appreciate everyones ideas, was beginning to get a bit frustrated because couldn't find anything to do the job, but now it is definately do able.

I use MS backup for backing up all the data, the system runs 24/7 and its scheduled to run Tuesday 2am. It only backs up changes, which means most of the time there is only 20-30gb MAX changes to copy over. All of the backup drives are currently running externally in IDE>USB enclosures, that way if the PSU or Motherboard does die, it shouldnt fuber the external drives.

quick calculation and that is just over 1800 CD's and my brother has
that amount of cd's/vinyl in their collection so its doesnt seeem far fetched to me. Granted he is a music lover and was a DJ. to be honest if its for a media server it doesnt seem that bad at all.

On another note i have 1tb of combined storage and i havent got back up for it and i have lost a few drives recently. so i would hate to lose the data thats being mentioned here!

says music

I know what it says. I can't identify to having 1000s of CDs, but I can with having 1000s of DVDs. But I dont see why it would be impossible for someone who has the same passion for music as I have for movies to have an equivalent number of music CDs.

It was just a comparison to ask why it wasnt possible.

NO WAY u have 1.4TB of legal music do you know how much that would cost?

Ive got easily over 2000 original CDs and maybe 500 vinyl.... i could do photos showing the ~1000cds ive got stored in my living room (the rest are safely stored in the loft due to having them on PC), but tbqfh, I dont give a rats if you believe me or not. :p

Ive also got over 750 DVDs, but I dont store them on my PC, that would take a lot of storage space.

I'm happy with 1gb of songs!!

DreederOcUK: I wouldnt mind a picture of em. Not cause I doubt, but I love to see other peoples collections. Saw a damn impressive pic a while back of someones basement full of racks and racks of games for dozens of consoles

I also have over 1000 DVDs, with about 400 CDs. They do take up a lot of space which is another reason for storeing them digitally. I have done that with the CD's already, so the originals are now boxed in the attic, and of course it is a lot easier to find what you are looking for when they are stored digitally.

From my original question concering the case, I have decied to go with a rack mount solution. I have a rack mounted server coming, have got a 9u enclosure and will use the coolermaster 3 x 5.25 to 5 x 3.5 bay adapters mounted on a tray to secure all the drives. I have ordered 100cm long sata cables to attach them all, but not have to consider powering them all up. The controllers do performed staggered spin up, though I am not entirely happy with powering them all from the servers on board power supplies.

Does anyone know if an ATX power supply can be used without being attached to a motherboard? I just need a decent one that can run 16 sata drives. Intel seems to recommend having 20 watts available per drive. The server is speced at supporting five drives with the included two 430 watt PSU, but again do not want to push it to run all 16 drives.

Anyone got any ideas?
