Is there a good reason for cases and screen protectors on phones?

Is it just another bit of junk we buy?

In two years will it matter that your phone is a bit battered and bruised? It'll virtually be worthless.

Isn't it just like buying a new car with nice seats and buying seat covers just to keep it in better condition for the next owner?

Genuine question and just for discussion.

Your phone will be worth a lot less if you sell it covered in dents, scratches and damage.

Also a case isn't always for protection, some phones benefit from a case as they can be slippery to hold, I.e the one m8

My old Nexus 4 NEEDED a case as (like above) it was slippery, it would randomly go on various travels across the desk on its own and end on the floor!

All because of the glass back!

I've now bought one (through habit) for my Lumia 830, trouble is it'll cover up the nice 'Bright Orange' back when it arrives!!

I use a flip case to protect the screen, I've never come across a screen protector that was as good as the screen on any metric and I've never sold a phone so don't particularly care about dings i just want my phone working for me not away getting an overpriced sub standard repair.

With regard to screen protectors... I can't NOT scratch my screen. The first day I got my original Samsung I put it in and out my pocket all day - having ordered a screen protector online thinking that I'll just be careful for one day - and somehow it got a scratch right across the screen. Possibly on a zip of the pocket...dunno. I now don't use phones without them. I simply replace them every couple of months when the scratches become too distracting.

Cases are more to protect from drops and general wear and tear. I like how I can chuck it on a table and not worry about scratching it up.

All this being said, it depends on your phone usage as you say. If you replace often and will retain value from keeping it mint, then it's worth it. If you keep for 2 years plus, then it will have devalued so much, that general wear and tear will have minimal impact on value.

I've used my galaxy s3 for over 2 years now without a screen protector and there are only a couple of very minor scratches, cleaned up it still looks pretty much new. Protectors always look and feel rubbish ime, and are a compromise too far. I'd always have a case to protect the edges and aid holding though.

The only reason I keep my phone in a case is to protect it from breaking when dropped (happens sometimes). Otherwise I hate the feel of cases

I've got a tempered glass screen protector on my Z3 and it's great, just as good if not better than the screen and as I use it at work the screen tends to get scratches which would annoy me if I had to put up with them for two years.

As for a case, I've got a very slim casemate one. I'm not really sure why as I doubt I'll change it if it gets scuffed and scratched but I just don't like the thought of damaging such a shiny and expensive phone!

I use a glass screen protector on my Xperia Z1 and it's fantastic. Even took the hit of being dropped, without affecting the actual screen.

I think it depends if your phone feels slippery to hold. When I had an iphone I needed a case cos it was very slippery I dropped that everyday (my subconscious clearly telling me something hehe).
Where my s4 feels fine without a case however screen protector oh yes!

For the sake of peanuts (£2 tempered glass screen protector, £2.50 rip off spigen case from aliexpress) why not?

The glass screen protector has saved my LG G3's screen once already when i've dropped it. And the case has protected the corners on several occasions.

I think for the sake of a £5 its worth it. Having a scratched up screen is annoying when trying to read things on your phone, and having a nice non chipped/dented/paint peeling mobile device is just more pleasant to look at. Its also a lot cheaper than mobile insurance.

Thats my personal opinion.

I'm OCD and I never seem to be able to install glass screen protectors without getting dust trapped under them (yes I did do in the bathroom).

Instead, I use matte screen protectors. They're highly scratch-resistant, make the phone easier to use outdoors and dust can easily be removed from underneath with tape.

You definitely do need screen protectors. Sand, grit in the environment will scratch your phone screen.
