Cash machine design

Yeah the ones that charge you to withdraw YOUR money really nark me off. However they make a killing because of their convenience and the fact that people are desperate for cash.

The £5 note is the note which is highest demand and is in biggest shortage. It's used mainly in retail and isn't considered worthwhile for ATMs to pack 'em. Though there are a few exceptions in certain unis that do have £5 cassettes. Also most £5 tend to be tatty and are no good for use in ATMs. It would be nice if £50 were in more ATMs.

They have one at my uni that gives out crisp new £5 notes every time, its great, and no one uses it because its round the corner from the other machines and no one really knows its there, plus it has no light so using it at night is a no no.

"Are you sure you wish to withdraw £200"

"Are you really sure you wish to withdraw £200?"

"Really?"

Or maybe a breathalyser on the machine :D. And also a biometric option so that only the person who put the card in can press the buttons.

There's a cash machine at kent uni hidden round a corner that always gives out new £5 notes too. It's like a secret cove of heaven.
edit: lol^^ same one Lagmeister is talking about;)

My one real issue is those Link cash machines you have to pay for. I've only used them twice but they take forever to confirm your details. I almost gave up the first time. It really wasn't obvious it was going to finish. Then after it did that you thought it was done, but there was another button to press to confirm that you actually wanted to carry out the transaction, which was confusing

The buttons. make them more touch sensitive so you can quickly press the buttons.
The most annoying thing for me is lloyds machines. You have 2 options, cash with receipt, and then cash with balance. You press cash with balance, and it asks you how much you wish to withdraw, once you choose, it then tells you your balance for roughly half a second. Why the hell cant it tell you your balance and THEN ask how much you want to withdraw. It would make the queue shorter as most people check their balance before withdrawing money.

One of the gripes I have with cash points is if the screen doesn't line up with the buttons, i've seen it a few times recently (mainly with older ones that use crt's), the screen is out of line with the buttons by maybe half an inch, so you end up with the onscreen option being between 2 buttons.

I suspect that's a UI problem bought about by the same software being used for multiple different hardware versions.

One feature I suspect might help some people would be for the card bit to be more clearly marked and separated compared to the receipt printer, especially in poor lighting (although that could just be my mum, she inserted her card somewhere it wasn't meant to go on a Barclays internal cash point).

Does anyone remember the old cash points that had a glass shield type thing that slid down when it wasn't in use? (just leaving the card slot exposed).

It would be nice if, when I request a withdrawl of £50, the machine actually gives me the money, rather than just charging me that amount.

(Just been ripped off by a cashmachine. Your thread was just unfortunately timed :))

I always find they are too low down and I'm only 6'3" I have to sort of lean back and duck to use them. They are also usually filthy, spit and snot is one thing but seen them used as urinals before now!

Yeah, same problem here. I have to tuck my head under the top of the machine to see which buttons I'm meant to be pressing.

Can be a problem depending on the maturity of your mates but.....

Most machines start at £10 (or £20) top left then either increase down the page and onto the second column or increase left to right then next line (hope that makes sense). In either case £100/£200 is ALWAYS bottom right. Swift jab to the bottom right of the screen and you've be forced to make a rather large withdrawal.......cheers guys!! ;)

Got and been got lots. It's good until it happens to you.

The layout of the keys for each ATM is standarised for those who are visually impaired and the 'quick cash buttons' should also be in the same place.

If you want to know more about ATM's mate, I fill them and am looking after 2 at the moment. Feel free to add me to MSN a.j.kitching AT orange.net Oh, we don't use £5's because they go through enough cash as it is. There are 4 cassettes with notes in and the £5's would only fit around £8k in a cassette. A busy machine can go though a lot more than that.

i like the natwest ones best

- least clicks needed to get to monies
- no crappy "would you like a receipt" prompt, etc!

^^ common tasks should be accessible in the least time possible!

The equipment inside is just a PC, normally running Windows XP for embedded systems or in older machines a version of OS2. Pretty simple stuff, doesn't have to do anything particularly taxing.

They do that already - besides it sucks the money back in after a set period of time 20s I think (they vary slightly from bank to bank) and it won't debit your account.

I thought they stopped that? reason being people were pulling notes from the middle of the bundle and machine couldn't detect it so they were getting free money. Was under the impression that to combat that they no longer sucked the money back in and was simply left for you or the next person to pick up and regardless of who picks it up the person requesting it was charged.

There are other ways of dealing with the thieving scum who do the :)

Im tall...cash machines are designed for people far shorter than me and its a frigging pain when looking at screens etc. and all that rubbish! maybe something to fiot talelr and shorter people better?

Disability discrimination act prevents this - machines need to be wheelchair friendly. You can have a machine higher up, but at least one of your machines must be within each iirc.

I would imagine if they can count money out they can probably count it back in again

Not sure about now but in the old days the ATM used the strip in the notes to sense they were there. The machine simply didn't notice if some notes were pulled from the middle of the bundle as the outer notes were there making the machine think nothing had been touched.

one thing that bugs me about cash machines if you have an overdraft of £1000 say some will show the current balance as £1000 and others show it more clearley at current balance £0 and avaliable £1000. this has confused me many tiems lol
