Castles UK

Defo Caernarfon Castle - really really cool castle, plus (unlike Conway) there is actually other things to see and do when you visit there. Good place for a day out and its a good drive too

Edit: what about Skipton?? How can you be from Manchester and not been to Skipton Castle?

I was just about to say Skipton. This is where we went for a shcool trip and from what I remember it was a really good day out.

Just realised I haven't been to see a castle since primary school. Going to have to have a trip there myself I think.

OP if you do Skipton this weekend you've also got Historia Normannis doing events there over Saturday and Sunday. They are an ok reenactment group covering the 12thC civil war between Stephen and Maude. Things like that are always worth a look.

Us Northerners should all band together and have an OcUK Skipton Castle outing :p

"So uh, what are the clock speeds on the cannons then?"

"I see this castle has enough expansion slots for 30 archers"

You jest, but I'd be up for it. This thread is gold for me as a "near Manchester" person.

Warwick, Arundal, Banbrugh and Alnwick are all extensively rebuilt, with only the outline reasonably original (and not even that at Warwick). If you prefer proper castles, try these (some already mentioned):

Caernarvon
Conwy
Harlech
Beaumauris
Kidwelly
Caerphilly
Raglan
Goodrich
Kenilworth
Chepstow
Dunstanburgh
Framlingham
Rochester
Bodiam
Corfe
Pembroke
Ludlow
Middleham
Warkworth

That should keep you busy for a while.

Thanks for all the advice guys I am currently looking them all up and doing some travel plans... I might just get the train if possible and stay over for a night.

Must admit I was slightly put off when Meridian mentions that Alnwick has been extensively rebuilt, I was close to planning a visit there.

A reasonable amount of Alnwick is still original as well as 14th century etc. and you've also got Berwick, Bamburgh, Lindisfarne, Norham and Dunstanburgh in the surrounding area. A lot of Bamburgh castle was rebuilt in the 19th century however the keep is original and there's been a few interesting digs in the grounds - nice views as well! Oh and they also filmed Blackadder at Alnwick!
