Hi all,

Just started working on a uni graphic design brief for Castrol Oil.. Having a bit of trouble distinguishing the difference between the ranges but I've had a bit of an informed guess and would like someone to confirm if possible?

EDGE - Premium Oil, for use mostly in 'premium' marques

MAGNATEC - Mid range oil? Castrol's site talks about 'intelligent molecules' I'm guessing its a marketing gimmick and this product is just pitched at the average Joe.

GTX - Economy Oil? This is the one I'm really unsure about as the site only specifies that it should be used in cars on 70k or over..? So is it their 'budget' option?

Basically I've been asked to redesign the packaging to improve both navigation of the range and the pouring process. Both of which I'm yet to embark on.. so any criticism of current packaging/suggestions for improvement are welcome.

Cheers for anyone who takes the time to reply. Much appreciated.

EDGE - Synthetic

MAGNATEC - Semi-Synth

GTX - Mineral

I think, no doubt someone will have a better explanation to them though :p

In the US Castrol has a different range of whizzy names.
I'd like to see them minimise the use of the sub-brand in favour of a simple description.
Hence, GTX in small letters and MINERAL: for higher mileage engines, or something more prominently.
If they want to 'improve navigation of the range', start by making it so the packaging tells you what the oil does, and what it's for, rather than have to look it up in a book.

I used to work for Castrol, admittedly we actually made cutting fluids at our plant, however all of the above looks about right to me.

There's more goes into choosing the oil for a car than how "premium" the marque is.

When my car was new, 0W30 Edge fully synthetic recommended by Castrol may have been better for it than 10W40 semi-synthetic as specified in the handbook. But after 100,000 miles I wouldn't be surprised if it made the tappets rattle.

Yeah - Sounds about right for the public's comprehension :)
