there's a general rule which i follow that actually works rather well - stay .1 release behind the current release unless they fix a huge problem for you. That way everybody else can complain and bug test the newest drivers while you are just playing the games.

How does that work?
Your on 6.1 and they release 6.2 which everyone complains about etc. They then release 6.3 and then you move to the 6.2s which everyone complained about :p
 
lol. no , if they complain about it enough i dont bother. im not fussed about updating drivers unless i have specific problems. i wont do it for the sake of saying "hey, i have the latest drivers" lol
 
your misson, should you choose to accept, is to find a post where anyone has said "hayyyyyyyyyyy guyz looka my latestest drivers!".
I think you will need more than years you have left to find one ;)
 
megh... I see it as more of a "thanks for the link / bump". Im 100% sure no one who posts "downloading them down" is trying to say it as some kinda status symbol. But if you want to read into every comment and twist it into something its clearly not. well to quote "good for you lol" ;)
 
seriously i dont even know what your point is. people jump on them and complain when they dont work, you and i both know that. That's why i dont bother.

problem with ati cards is that you need to update the drivers every time a new game is out.

thats the one thing i like about the nvida drivers. they are so robust and don;t require patching when new games come out.

i can happily play games like oblivion, fear etc on old 77 series nvidia drivers. but i doubt its gonna be any good for an ati card owner to play with the 6.0 drivers.

I have to say the 6.3 chuck patch drivers are very robust. ATI have almost caught up with nVidia in that regard...almost.

ATIs drivers are fine. Yeah people have a few problems, but thats what forums are for. There are plenty of posts with people complaining about Nvidia drivers - shimmering etc etc.
Ive only had one problem with the drivers and that was slow down in Midnight Club when smoking the motorbike tyres. I play plenty of games and dont see wtf all the fuss is about tbh.

Think some people are just not happy unless they are unhappy and moaning. The CCC is the classic -> so what if it hogs resource.... wtf do you have it open?! When closed it uses a similar amount of memory to MSN when minimised and about 4 or 5 times less when MSN is open!

I think the point most people are making that if the drivers themselve are such a resource hog then this takes resources away from the game it self. And in the case of the CCC this can over 100Mb of memory. If you only have 512Mb then this can make quite an impact on gaming
 
100MB of memory? I don't think so. Check running services, there's CLI.EXE, and a couple of ATI*.* but I think they're under 100MB

Are you sure you're not confusing hard disc used with RAM TSR's?

Not sure where you have got that from mate. I have 2 instances of CLI.exe with one using 3.1mb and another 3.7mb
In comparison msn is using 32mb, internet explorer is using 27mb and task manager is using 4.2mb.
