Cat Dispute

I sympathise with your situation as a similar thing happened to us when we moved into our current rental, cat from a few doors down wandered in and around our property at all times of the day. One night we left a window open and it just let itself in, we kicked it out obviously as, happy as we were to see it, it's not our cat and we didnt want any bother with the neighbours.
However it started coming to our bedroom window at night crying to get in about a week or so later. I was for taking it back to them but there was obviously no one in at their house.
Few months later the couple split up and were scarcely at the house, leaving Paris the cat with us ( they HAD to know we were looking after it ) so we took her on. Went on hols in July 2008 ( cat had been practically ours for 6-7 months by this point ) and asked my 'rents and a pal of hers to watch out for the cat etc. Came back to a 'for sale' sign on their house and no sign of the cat. 3 days later it turned up with a massive abscess on its ear which we got treated at a cost of around 70 quid for all 3 visits to the vet.
In september when the house sold the women turned up in her car and lifted her from the street. No mention that she was bothered, no thanks nothing.
Sorry I cant offer any advice but, like I say, its not a nice position to be in. And, like others have said, the cat will go where the heck it pleases but mostly where it gets it gut fed!

As far as cats are concerned they are intelligent. You sure he has not been giving you these eyes and you have fallen for it

Well the cat seems happy enough to be with you Nix. He obviously wasn't all that happy with his original owner else he wouldn't have gone looking for steak and chips else where if he wasn't getting it at home.
I think she's just got the needle over the fact that she knows the little fella would rather be with you than her. Cats know when they are onto a good thing. I'd point out to her that the cat is happy with you and if she was really that bothered she'd have done something about it much sooner.
Like others have said, chipping him doesn't prove he's yours, but she can't have been looking after him as he came to you pretty much all skin and bone by the sounds of it. I wouldn't be at all surprised if she couldn't afford to pay for the treatment he needed to have to sort his skin complaint out. Bet she had plenty of money to waste on fags though.
Your best off keeping him inside untill this dispute has been settled.

I have a cat which qualifies me for this thread. This other cat friend comes in sometimes for food, but Its not so friendly, doesnt want a pat and is generally scared of us - just gobbles down our cat's food and runs. Makes you wonder if it gets fed properly, but its not to my liking, I wouldn't take it in overnight say.
If a lovely cat like my own one were to do the same, but be more friendly; then I might 'adopt' [steal] it as long as theres no collar and if it lives reasonably far away.
Best option might be to ignore the lady and carry on as normal. If its used to going out, I'd still let it. You'd just need to be prepared if it didn't come back, but be confident that it will.

Excuse me but we have two cats, we've had them micro-chipped, neutered when they were kittens and always pay the hefty vet bills so we are not irresponsible people. It's just that some idiots who clearly SHOULD NOT have cats like the idiot lady who is the subject of this thread, do.
The RSPCA can only get involved if this cow is cruel or has been cruel to her cat; clearly she has by not feeding him enough, so Nix, keep him and if she gets ****ed off and threatens legal action, then get the RSPCA involved as the cat has clearly been malnourished.
I despise people who are cruel to animals, and the lack of nourishment through negligence or sheer stupidity makes my blood boil!
what ? youd 'steal' someones cat ? how would you feel if your own went missing and it turned out it was living with someone else...?
and for the OP our cat has been neutered and still has his balls
must be how they do it these days because ill admit we where a bit surprised at first as our cats years back had nothing left . his 2 brothers from the litter are the same (and live elsewhere on our street)he also doesnt wear a collar. none of our cats do and i dont even think any of the others around here do either

actually i don't even understand why you took him to the vets anyway unless he was seriously ill ? i definitely dont understand why you got him chipped. was no effort made to find an owner ?
people jumping on the woman for being cruel to animals need to get over themselves too. if she had just moved house then it could easily of gotten out and got lost/confused
gotta admit id be fuming if one of my cats got took away like this just because it had gone into there house

Id side with the op here, obviously hes taken the animal in, treated it well, whereas the alleged original owner doesnt seem to have treated it very well, in the interest of the cat, it would be better off with the op, my neighbours cat is a frequent visitor to my house, she actually waits on my wall every friday night for me coming back from the pub, because she knows ill pet her and give her a bite to eat, im mainly a dog person but she's the friendliest cat ive ever seen, shes the only cat ive ever seen that will run out to greet you, much in the same way as a dog would do.
He was hanging around our back-garden for the best part of a month and was getting thinner and thinner. If the other lady really did move down this road and the cat just got lost, then it wouldn't have taken him long to find her house considering the length of time he was living outside.
It was after a month, with the cat being very hungry and the weather starting to turn that we decided he could sleep inside. We never forced him, he just came in; he used to bolt inside if we ever opened the door to let our other cat out or put-out/collect some washing. There was a fair few days of transition where we always opened the door so see if he wanted to go back out, but he wasn't interested. He had nothing to indicate he was anything other than a stay: his skin was terrible to the point he was gnawing himself bloody, and he was thin so he wasn't eating other than what he pinched from our other cat's bowel.
There was a lady a few doors up who was selling cats around the same time, and we tried getting in contact, but she must've moved. I asked a neighbour myself who knew nothing, and we kept an eye and ear open. There was no attempt on anyone else's side to indicate that this was their lost cat. Flyers are often seen up on lamposts, and there was none. The reason I checked with my neighbour is that recently he'd told me that he'd lost one of his cats and I thought it might be his. Evidently though, it wasn't.
The cat was effectively living here for about three weeks before he was taken up the vet; plenty of time for questions to be asked or flyers to be posted. He went to vet because of his skin and after checking he wasn't chipped, we decided to chip him whilst we were at it, as it was pretty clear at this point that no-one was actually looking for him. If we didn't take him in, I have no doubt that the little bugger would've died in the cold-snap that came recently.
