cat experts.. what's this?

Here's a couple pics of our ragdoll for comparison reasons :) Her fur doesn't look as long as in the OP but I suppose it can vary.

Being wierd!!

Looks like a seal colourpoint ragdoll to me. They are great pets, very affectionate and love attention. I've had mine for 3 years now, and I've never seen them play with their claws or bite anyone unless they are deliberately being annoyed. I've never heard of a properly looked after ragdoll hurting anyone.

Col - your ragdoll looks like a kitten, I'm guessing it's under 2 years old? As they get older their coats get a bit bigger and their points darken.

That's an old picture of my blue colourpoint girl, she's bigger now, but you can see her coat is a lot more full.

Some great stuff here, thanks everyone :D

That sounds a lot like the one in the picture. He was very affectionate and vocal. His temperament was as charming as his looks.

Unfortunately I have to take my girlfriends cat of 13 years for it's final trip to the vet tomorrow. I'm gutted but gf is wrecked. I'm sure a fluffy blue eyed kitten would help her get over it.

How do you go about buying a cat like this? I normally try and take abandoned animals so I don't know what I should be looking for in a breeder. Any tips?

I'm so sorry to hear that :(. Ragdolls are expensive cats, but they really are great. I'd recommend looking somewhere like http://www.tbrcc.co.uk/ to find a breeder. They will only register breeders who meet their standards, so you have a bit more of a guarantee with them.

Never agree to buy a kitten until you've met the breeder and the kitten. A good breeder should be willing to any questions you have, I'd probably ask things like how long they've been breeding, why they do it, how big their cattery is, what are the aims of their breeding program. I would go for a breeder with a small/medium cattery, maybe one or two males and 6 or so females. Any more and it's less personal, which means the kittens likely won't be well socialised.

A good breeder should be interested in you, and probably want you to sign a contract when you pick up the cat. I'd expect things such as you won't allow it outside alone, neutered by a certain age (and probably confirmation of this before you recieve papers), no showing if it's sold as pet quality, nothing to worry about.

I wouldn't buy a cat from a breeder who keeps her females outside, they should be part of the family. The breeder of my second cat has 2 breeding males who are kept in a heated shed in the garden (whole males spray and smell), and about 4 females who are kept inside and treated like part of the family.

If you need anything else, send me an email and I'll see if I can help :).
