CAT heatshield? Honda Civic Type R EP3. Simply, can I rip the thing off?

As title. I have a heatshield around my cat converter on my 2004 EP3 Type R.

It seems to have split around the bolt mounts where it wraps around the cat (if that makes sense). The metal has split around one of the bolt holes, it's only thin metal... dont think it'll weld back together with ease.

Alas I have an annoying resonating rattle at 3500/4000rpm and if I'm slowing down or sitting at those revs it resonates/rattles loads.

Can I just cut the thing off? I'm sort of reluctant to as really it's gonna have been put on there for a reason... but I don't think it's repairable.

Thanks :)

2004 rusty Hondas dont need 'sorting' by Honda themselves, unless you have data that suggest an improvement in heatshield quality and corrosion resistance on 7 year old products influences new car sales?

Take it off.

I think in your excitment to cry some more you missed the point to what I was saying

Hondas as far back as I can remember have suffered from rattles from the heat shield, you would think they would have sorted it from 2001 models on, maybe after 2006 they did I dont know but I do know I havent had to remove a heat shield from any other cars

Have you had anything other than Hondas though :P

Most other cars seem to prefer to have the actually body heatshield fall off I guess.

Only a couple :o

Nissan, Toyota, Audi. Maybe you're right though maybe they just fall off or something

You should know how common this was was on EK,EG,DC models though, you were there! I bet you've had to do it yourself at some point :p I know I had to do it 3/4 times I just find it slightly odd from that it was never sorted on the 2001+ cars but like you say maybe they just didnt care as it doesnt affect new car sales

My cat heat shield needed off on mine then I got a new rattle and it was the drive shaft heatshield annoying as hell.

Yeah I've heard those rattle too lol, hence I wanna stick it on the ramp and sit in it revving it whilst he checks.

99% sure it's the cat one though as by tapping it it moved and rattled so I would imagine it's that which is resonating a lot.

Thanks all, just didn't wanna rip it off if it's purposeful.

CAT?

Rover Coupe with a 1990 B16a1 engine in and then 1996 Import Integra when VOSA only has emission standard for 1998 (UK models).....

Ive never had to run one for an MOT, there is no heatshield to fall off :p

Just pulled it downwards a bit from the mount on one side and it's not too bad now just a little bit as you pass 3k but we will take it off when we get chance one saturday.

I wouldn't mind sticking a sports cat on it at some point, don't wanna go too mad on it as I hear if you stick manifolds and decats on they run rich and kpro is then a good addition. That stuff is too expensive for me lol

Cars first used after 31st of July 1995 that have no match in the VOSA database like a 1996 Integra are supposed to take a default CAT test not a non-CAT test (I'm not trying to say your lying or anything just pointing out you have got lucky so far with testers not knowing what their doing).
