Cat life expectancy

Our outdoor cat is 19 years old and perfectly fine, still hunting mice and the lark. Then again, we live in rural Derbyshire where there exists no vehicles to run her over!

'Funny' that this thread has come up today. Our cat, Stanley, passed today. He was around 16-years-old, but we don't actually know for certain as we got him from a Cat rescue centre. He was pretty much an indoor cat, not through us keeping him in, he just prefered to laze around the house. When he did go out he'd just walk around the garden for a bit then come back in of his own accord.

His death has hit me harder than I expected actually, we've had him for around 6-7 years and he was very much part of the family, and a real character at times.

RIP Stanley :(

My cat was an outdoor cat until aged 12. He's been an indoor cat since then (now 14) and still seems to be going strong.

It's not suitable for him to be an outdoor cat here, feel a bit bad but I think he's got used to it now.

Sorry to hear that DreXeL. RIP Stanley.

All my cats roam free.

Frisbee lived to 21.
Charlie is still going strong at 14.
Jessica got run over by my sisters bf on the drive when she was 4. :(
Saffie got run over by a car when she was 3.
Oskar is still going strong at 4, but I expect him to get run over soon as he is really dumb.

Top two cats were ginger toms from a cat rescue place.

The bottom three are stupid expensive inbred maine coons. Never again. Cat rescue all the way.

Sorry to hear that. They do become part of the family and their loss is hard to bear. Keep your chin up.

RIP Stanley. :(

Where di you hear this about outdoor cats only living 3-5 years? My cats were 6 or 7 and they were outdoors all the time, but then got run over when we moved house :(

One of my ma's cats lived to 22. Didn't do a whole lot by then though, just lay about all day. The rest of hers (so far) lived till 18-20, all allowed to go in and out as they pleased. Obviously one got hit by a car and died younger, but that doesn't count does it?

Its not right to keep them inside.

Everywhere I've read, it seems the general consensus is that the average life expectancy of an outdoor cat is 3-5 years, whilst for an indoor cat it is around 15-18 years. However, going from this, it seems my outdoor cat has surpassed this by quite a lot as he is 18 this year.

Can I expect him to give in any time soon?:p

An outdoor cat 3-5 years?! I think they mean wild cats...
All my outdoor cats have lived till 16+.

He eats a lot more these days though but there's nothing wrong with him so I guess he has just become greedy. :p
Your cat isn't greedy, he needs to eat more food because he cannot absorb the nutrients from the food he eats as well as he used to as he's older. Our vet told me today.

Our cat has just come back from the vets & is recovering from Pancreatitis which our vet says is common in older cats (she is 13) she also has a heart murmur which is also quite common in older cats. That & a few tablets, some high calorie content catfood & £450 vet bill. :(

18 is a good age. Does your vet do a regular "senior" check up?

Mine were 16 when they died. Both outdoor cats. They were brothers and we lost them within a couple of months of each other :'(

Sooty the smallest yet the hunter of the two was always getting into fights but in the end he had an overactive thyroid. The pills didnt work so it was removed but then after a while the other one became overactive too :(

Sweep suffered from kidney problems and again the pills didnt seem to work :(

I miss my boys. Even though it was several months ago I still sometimes forget and expect to see them curled up asleep on the bed or on the sofa. I would love to get another cat but my parents are adamant that they don't want anymore.

So instead when I visit a friend I give his cat lots of cuddles and tickles :)

My cats 18 this year and he's still going strong. He's a cranky old bugger mind, but he still loves a cuddle and drools like crazy.

Our next door neighbour's cat is 19. My mother in law's cat is about 18. Both outdoor cats and holding up well.

It depends where you live, really. Near a very main road, and there's likely to be trouble. Somewhere with a decent amount of safer outdoor territory, and they should be fine.

My mum had three outdoor cats. One of them died a few days ago aged 18, of natural causes. It was sadder than I thought. She's survived by her mum and her brother.

we've had 2 cats that died. well not counting my kitten that was poisoned by some ****** round the corner when i was about 3 years old

one was 21 and the other was around 17 but had a very hard life. both outdoor cats. probably outdoor more than in even
