Cat5e External Cable

i have a couple of runs outside (approx 35metres each) but mine are not external cabling and never had a problem with them so you should be ok

anyone got any tips for crimping/finishing a solid core cat6 cable?

I've had a nightmare with all the ones I've tried to do.

The reason you get external grade cable is because over time UV damages standard internal (non-black) cable. Not instantly an affecting factor but if your cable is going to be out for a while, it's worth getting external grade. Cat5e would be fine and terminating it into crimped ends is also fine.
I have 3 runs in this manner.

Always best to add a metre or 2 just for some slack in case it's needed. Leftover can either be cut off or coiled up internally. Absolute pain if you cut a tad too short.

Cat 5 will be fine, if your paranoid use cat6, or just use cat 5 and that thin D line trunking which you can buy cheaply per meter from screwfix

Terminate in to faceplates

Ive decided to run separate cables to both bedrooms via outside and was wondering if this cable would be ok

Ps i need a crimper too so if anyones got any links to a decent one, but i dont want to pay the earth

For my basic home network (parent's house so limited to what I can do) I have my PC, Dad's laptop, Smart TV, BD player, and Virgin Tiivo all of a gigabit network with (currently) the VM superhub. The cable that runs to my bedroom to patch in my PC is out side the house tacked to the brick wall. I even had it running on an old cat5 cable for a while without issue, but I quickly replaced it with cat6. It's been outside for years and never had an issue.

looking to run some cat5e or cat6 outdoors too, they will go through brick and into surface mounted Ethernet wall plates, max length 20 metes

silly questions time:

1. ive read its not good to use cable clips (small arch and nail) to hold Ethernet cables outdoors due to risk of compressing the wires inside, true?
2. if the cable is 5mm thick, do i use a 5mm drill bit to pull through the wall or use 6mm?
3. i take it im looking for solid copper core stuff like: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/30m-CAT-6...uting_NetworkingCables_RL&hash=item35de4494a7

Thanks!

As long as the cable clips are the correct size they shouldn't bother the cable. External cable also tends to have a much thicker/stiffer jacket so there's less chance of damage. In reality you can do some really nasty out of spec. things to network cables and they still work fine, especially over these short distances.

I'd use a drill several mm bigger than the cable. Drill so the outside hole is lower than the inside hole. Also make sure the cable always comes up to the hole.

You will usually want solid core cable for this sort of job.
