Hi,

I've had some cat6a put behind a wall and would like to have a go at wiring this up.

Can someone give me a checklist of what I need? I'm a bit clueless :(

Did you read the sticky? Someone spent a lot of time writing that and there is 90% of the information you need in there.

Do you want to terminate it into sockets or plugs?

If it’s sockets or a patch panel then you’ll need a punch down tool. I like the TrendNet one - https://www.amazon.co.uk/TRENDnet-Punch-Krone-Blade-TC-PDT/dp/B0000AZK4D

if it’s plugs you’ll need a crimp tool. I like the Platinum tools one. https://www.amazon.co.uk/Platinum-C...ix=ez+crimp+tool+platinum,aps,159&sr=8-8&th=1

And if you’re using the EZ jack system then you’ll need some pass-through RJ45 connectors.
https://www.amazon.co.uk/VCELINK-Connector-Through-Shielded-Installation/dp/B08G4D3HHL/ref=sr_1_3?dchild=1&keywords=Ez+RJ45+cat6a&qid=1624387018&sr=8-3

Whatever you’re doing you’ll need a cable stripping tool. https://www.amazon.co.uk/Uvital-Universal-Stripper-Network-Telephone/dp/B08J2L8D6Y/ref=sr_1_9?adgrpid=52609189389&dchild=1&gclid=EAIaIQobChMIqva2tvGr8QIVhhkGAB2_WQ-5EAAYASAAEgI_7vD_BwE&hvadid=259048997031&hvdev=c&hvlocphy=1006893&hvnetw=g&hvqmt=b&hvrand=18211892075895488610&hvtargid=kwd-296721428608&hydadcr=28150_1821052&keywords=cable+strippers&qid=1624387081&sr=8-9

And a pair of electricians scissors https://www.amazon.co.uk/C-K-492001...s=electricians+scissors&qid=1624387132&sr=8-5

If you watch this video it shows you how to prep the cable and make up a plug and a jack.

https://youtu.be/fDWM6Bpb_yA They use CAT6 but CAT6A is the same, just crimp the shielding under the metal outer on the plug.

A lot of people will Vtell you to buy a cheap cable tester - https://www.amazon.co.uk/VCELINK-GJ...9Y2xpY2tSZWRpcmVjdCZkb05vdExvZ0NsaWNrPXRydWU=

Any specific questions, please ask!

Thank you WJA96. Nope, like an idiot I didn't even look for the sticky but lesson learnt - will have a read of that too but I'm starting to think it'd be safer to get someone in to do this as I don't have enough cable to make many mistakes :(

Get yourself a few meters of cable and practice. It’s a skill, but it’s one you can learn.

And it can be cheaper to get someone in terminate the connections. The first 2-3 hours in labour terms are paid for in terms of not having to buy £100 worth of tools.

I purchased all the tools (including the cable tester) you recommended and had a go tonight and have a working test cable! It's significantly shorter than it was and pretty messy at both ends but it works! Thanks WJA96 :)

I found the hardest part (by far) was trying to get the cables in to the tiny little cable guide holder in the correct order. There must be an easier way!? I did find cutting the cables at an angle helped a bit.

The next step is to get the cables around the house in to some wall sockets. Can I use standard RJ45 wall sockets with CAT6A?

Just hold the strands between your forefinger and thumb and slide them home into the connector. Practice, practice, practice.

And you need to buy CAT6A components with CAT6A cable. Just look for CAT6A in anything you buy and it should work fine.
