Catalyst 8.12 Beta

Needs all the help it can get from what I've heard!

Im rather interested if these drivers will finally fix the major problem people are having with the HD series of ATI cards. The one where the display driver stops responding and can BSOD the machine. Everyone is pointing the finger at everyone else but there must be some kind of work around :(

i was getting lots of BSOD's with my 4780x2, which started around about when i put the new card in and finally put my rma'd memory back in so back to 4gigs. For ages I tried stuff with the card, the bsod's went away when I dropped my cpu overclock and mostly, fsb of chipset. Looks like either the card sucks up so much extra juice that the mobo has less power than it used to or more like, from testing with other computer, that my mobo is simply on its way out and not stable at same level as before... yay for abit mobo's.

Either way, people see a BSOD these days that says drives, or the display driver stop responding and automatically put the blame on the driver said to not be working. Unstable overclocks, mem, cpu or faulty hardware can cause ANY driver to screw up and in general a machine under full load in 3d is under a lot more power drain and load than prime will put your computer under. Lots of people are overclocked, use prime to test stability(despite its age and basically, its lack of complexity and lack of really using the cpu hard) and put it all on the card/drivers. Yet my problem, wasn't the card at all, since I dropped clocks, upped voltage and eventually replace the board/cpu the ati driver issues/crashes in games have completely dissappeared.

I have been saying that for ages.
Also passing memtest,Linpack,Prime,OCCT does not always=100% stable OC as i can pass all of them & then run Vista Experience Index & it will lock-up on the WMV playback test & BSOD.

appears AVIVO video converter dont work by using the GPU yet! i guess Stream aint enabled yet with the beta. good boost in FC2! was gettin 46fps @ 1680x1050, DX10, 8xAA and everything at max and now getting 55fps! also. gta iv appears to be playable for me now!

tis, you just need the right avivo client which ain't out yet I don't think.

Is farcry 2 super CPU intensive or something? I fail to get 30fps at 1680x1050 DX10 8xAA O_o

Unless you got a 4870X2 already?

The error that a lot of people seem to have including me can occur when checking your email, leaving the pc on the desktop, gaming or at any time it feels like it. Seems that it is caused mainly by people who run Vista x64, with more than one monitor and Aero enabled.

The fault is not just with Ati cards though, seems like Nvidia has similar problems which have got people pointing the finger at Microsoft (never an unpopular choice) but I would have thought that ATI/Nvidia could work round this?

My machine is a new build, nothing more than a few months old and had the problems since new, happens on stock or OC. For now ive left Aero disabled and it seems to be happier....just uglier.

Is it worthwhile using the drivers then, or is it gonna be better to wait for the officials?
Are the officials likely to be any different?

I'm currently on the 8.10 Hotfix drivers

Ahh, so maybe that's the source of my issues, I have those very problems.
I like Aero don't really want to take it off.
Is turning off the second monitor in games likely to help?

I get this exact problem! Every time i have my 2 monitors set up with aero enabled. Thanks for highlighting other people experience it 2 ! :D

This issue does not effect Nvidia cards. I went from an 8800 gts to a 4870 and only had the problem with ATI. Utl x64. Which oddly enough, just manifested itself in a small way just then, the screen blanked for a second, lost Aero and then restarted. This with only one monitor enabled. This is something ATI need to address not Nvidia or MS.

yup, i had the crashing at completely random times, in game, out of game, just booted, 2days after being turned on after lots of heavy load. Vista 64x, dual screen. I've now disabled aero but mostly because WoW windowed, and lotro often wouldn't trigger full 3d speeds and once i disasabled it i got more consistant performance.

Dual screen is an issue, but all my stability issues went away when i dropped my clocks and upped my voltages, in my case I think i have a dying mobo as I wasn't heavily overclocked and this chip has done far far higher before. But in general most people see a crash in super pi and they'll say, its mem and downclock, they see a crash in prime and think its cpu and drop their overclock, they see a crash of ATi drivers(or nvidia) and they instantly jump to the conclusion that its the only problem.

I've got so used to it, a plain grey bar would look too bland, I like having it graphite.

Purely psychological but i can't help but feel like its a waste of resources having things like the sidebar and fancy looking task bar running, I've always gone for the very limited, lets say "simplistic" look

These 8.12 betas have fixed my Farcry 2 DX10 issues, instead of getting 30fps average with DX10 Ultra high 0xAA I now average 47fps :)

I don't like the side bar (it's disabled), but I do like the taskbar.

I used to run XP in 'simplistic mode' it basically looked like windows 98 :) but I preferred the look of Vista much more so I just stuck with it.
