Caught Speeding!

Thats BS.

Point 1. Its not breaking the speed limit that can kill people. Its speed inappropriate for the conditions. Doing 70mph on the motorway in a monsoon leaving the highway code prescribed stopping distance is far far more dangerous than doing 80mph on a clear summers day on an empty motorway

You are correct in what you say, but in a built up area, doing 40mph instead of 30mph is considerably more likely to kill someone no matter what the conditions in the event of a pedestrian collision.

I am 100% for speed appropriate to the conditions, but many people drive way too fast in many built up areas.

how do you know it was a built up area up area with pedestrians

Not all 30 limits are in built up areas with pedestrians. You're making generalisations.

I never said I did, I was making the point that it isn't always condition dependant as YOU suggested.

FACT: A collision at any given speed will be worse at any higher speed. Go look at accident statistics, far more accidents involving injury happen in built up areas, motorways account for less than 10% of all accidents involving injury so your example of a motorway was far less relevant than my example.

In other words the danger of speed is as much location dependant as it is condition dependant .

Maybe try not to speed, huh?

Apologies if that seems a tad obvious, but your opening post suggests that this notion may have escaped you.

All true, but there are times where it's safe to exceed the speed limit, and times where it's not. There's plenty of roads around here that are 30 that are perfectly safe at 40 but would still be classed as "in a built up area".

Yes, 100% true, there has been an obsession with these 30mph limits being extended and whole sections of dual carriageway with a 40mph speed limit.

It is roads like those that make people disrespect speed limits.

Near me there is a country lane (b-road) between 2 villages which is almost entirely 40mph limit, it is a total joke.

Milton Keynes got it right imho unless they have now changed all their ring roads.

Agreed - several roads in the area are massive wide perfect visibility roads with so little traffic and are 30MPH. Ironically with very little pedestrian activity too. Most people drive 40MPH+ down this road as it isn't actually signposted, however the lamp-post spacing dictates it is a 30.

Fact a wide road with lots of visibility is less likely to be a crash into pedestrians, so when they aee a 30 limit and make you feel like your driving backwards are a bit nuts.

ive not had any points yet but im told that these mobile vans keel setting up no less than 3 mins from my house and parking behind a row of cars so you dont see them till its yoo late ill get some eventuslly.

of course id give the fergie excuse, reslly need a number 2, had to make it home. And hopefully get a speed awareness at worst and leave some huge 11's after passing the course. ah yes i have it all planned out now lol.

NeoReloaded, can you give us a bit moe info please? What speed were you supposed to be travelling at and what were you actually doing?

Leicestershire police are terrible for it.

They deliberately plant the vans in hidden locations in all the roads that are much lower speed limits than they should be.

On 40 limit dual carriageways, on 30 limit roads that have wide open spaces. Look at this for example :

Its arrow straight, banked on either side by high grass banking so there are no sideroads for pedestrians to appear from, and with good visibility and 4 lanes wide.

It feels like a 40, and the police know this, so they hide the camera vans behind the trees halfway down to deliberately catch people out.

In contrast, west yorkshire police barely uses the camera vans, and even then when it does it doesn't put them in sneaky locations and try and hide them behind trees.

On the road above, don't the street lamps make it a 30 unless otherwise signed ?

Plus I'm guessing that the reason for the 30 is the bus stops, people crossing etc etc.
