Hey guys

As you are all fairly smart chaps I wonder if someone has any ideas abut an issue that has developed on my 08 CBR.

Pulled up to some traffic lights and was changing down from 4th to 3rd and the gearbox wouldn't select 3rd gear. Pulled it to the side of the road and managed to get it to select the gear by letting the clutch go and it popped into gear. This is now happening on all the gears but not every change. 1 - 3 seem to be fine most of the time but 3 - 6 have this issue more that 1 - 3.

The chain was a bit slack to adjusted that, problem still there. Gear lever assembly was cleaned from the lever to the engine and lubricated, problem still there. Clutch cable adjusted, no change. Before I take it to a mechanic is there anything you can suggest?

I've had this on every bike I've had, I think it's down to sequential gearbox design. It even happened during my DAS, the instructor said do exactly what you did, just let out the clutch slightly to provide some movement within the gearbox, and it should shift into the next gear.

If you're not having trouble when the bike is moving, I wouldn't worry too much about it personally. I don't do block changes when stationary now, I'll get as close to stopping as I can, then do basically a block change in the last few metres before stopping, so the gearbox always has some movement.

Clean the gear lever pivot. I had it on my old zx6r and the gearbox felt sloppy and wouldnt pick gears right at all.

Fully stripped and lightly greased the lever joints at the rearset end and it was 100%

Also had to do it on a few other bikes since

it happens when the engine is cold when not moving and when moving mostly when changing from 3rd up and above.

put new oil in today so will run it for a week to see if that helps.

fingers crossed that fixes it before i have to change the gearbox...

Unlikely to be the gear selector, its an 08 so probs to new to get those kinda problems.
If its working whilst on the move ignore it and mention it when you go for your next service.
They will probably test it and tell you it's fine anyway...
Like the others said, get your shifting down whilst moving. You can also try feeding the clutch each gear change so that you engage each gear as you shift down.

well it still happens when moving when changing up from 3rd and higher. the engine was hot yesterday and i managed a good 10 mile ride after a shorter one and it was fine for the second journey. will see how the bike likes the power 1 oil instead.

i do my own servicing with the old man and neither of us have come across anything like this before.
