CBT Information?

Just looking at doing mine, how do you guys find riding in the rain or at night? Thats my only concerns!

Riding in the rain aint much fun, but each to their own.

I like driving at night so presume will enjoy riding at night (the wife preffers it LOL)

I will tll you soon tho I have my Mod 2 test on Tuesday 3rd.

I suppose you get used to the rain, infact you are only up the road from me so used to the Scottish weather.

I just hope people see me at night.

I have to concentrate about 5,000 times more in the rain. Because the road surface is a lot more variable and generally more slippery, you can't just lean it into every corner that comes along. You have to pick your lines and feel the grip the whole time.

Night's fine though. Be fluorescent and you'll generally be seen. It's actually seeing other things that can be a problem (pedestrians who wander into the road dressed in black!).

Where about are you?

Give them a reason to see you

Yeah Just buy a high viz jacket, you may look liek a twonk but you wont be a dead twonk. Drivign School Im with make you wear them and funily enough it boosts my confidence.

I was driving down the A92 one night after work, the road was quiet, and I saw this like flashing waving light in the distance, as I got closer I realised it was a high viz tab on the guy on the bikes Bag it did the trick I saw it miles away.

I go very cautiously in the rain now after going a bit too vigarous, and ending up on my side, lol. Don't mind riding in the dark though.

I'd give another vote for doing it on a geared bike though, then at least you have the option later on. Picking the clutch and gears up was fairly straight forward and simple for me, he said we could have started on a scooter if I wanted, or he would put me back on a scooter if I didn't pick it up good enough, but that never happened, so was ok. was a good day.

OP - do it on a geared bike, but make sure you get a deal where if you don't reach the required standard in a day you can further time for free or at the very least reduced cost. That way if you spend some time on the geared and hate it, you can come back and do automatic without costing much/any more.

I am in Edinburgh but just about to move south of the city. Will be commuting by car until the spring and then looking at getting a Honda CBF or Yamaha YBR so will be avoiding the winter riding and will start in the spring when will do my CBT.

Good stuff, Pro-scot here in fife do the trainning on Honda CG125's and honda CBF500 and I know a lot of people will comment negativley on the CBF500 but I love the feel of it and would say for comuting it would be very practical. Power is there if you need it and probably has enough to get you into trouble.

My bike is currently in the shed, I was going to try get it on the road this year but im more incline to get it running and along to my garage where it is dry, then start riding about march next year.

Oh pluss to clear up a matter that keeps coming up on the Forums, Once you pass your bike test you have 6 points to play with in the first 2 years for your bike license, however, you still have 12 full points on the car(unless you have been bad or still in 2 years of passing the car test) If you are caught speeding or such on the bike and have say 3 points on the car license, The procurator fiscal/ Chief of police can take them into consideration.

Hope that helps

Unfortunately my bike will sit outside in the elements. Chained down of course!

EDIT: thats a CBF 125...

Get yourself a waterproof bike cover, it wont completely stop wet/ damp but willcertianly help it.

You will get a medium one from Forth gear from £22.99 Just chuck Forth gear into Google, its down South Queensferry, guys in there are a good laugh, Well are on the forums, and most people recomend them.

My insights on the above:

Rain riding is not that bad, I wear a 1 piece leather suit everytime I ride. If it rains, I chuck on my second pair of gloves that don't let water in and my boiler suit (waterproof suit that goes over the top). Job done, I rarely get wet. It doesn't bother me that much.

As for the feel of the bike, you will notice a difference, but as long as you back off and take things easy, you will have no issues and bare in mind, your tyres won't warm up as quick, maybe not at all so will have no where near as much stickiness as if they were in the dry so no knee down unless you really are comfortable. I have got my knee down in the wet once, I was bricking it but the bike held out, you would be surprised at what the tyres these days can handle.

Visability is the single and biggest problem for me in the wet. You will learn to adjust your view and ignore your visor, but spray rain on the motorway is a nightmare... Only one option for me, I sit behind a car that I can see it's lights clearly or at least stick to the middle lane so I can see the markings either side. You get used to it eventually.

Night riding, no problem, if you wear a tinted visor on a sunday ride out, simply carry your clear one in a bag or something. Obviously your view distance is cut down dramatically so no stunts and will slow you down, but not enough to make it a pain, just read the road well and you will be fine.

Not doubting you in the slightest, but have you got a source for that? Is that only for Scotland or for the whole of the UK? It's the first conclusive answer I've heard though, so cheers.

Or just buy one of these LOL

HERE

HAHA! Surely the helmet does not need to be that big to operate, all thats needed is a motor, battery pack (not even a big one! Maybe the size that powers a RC car) and a switch relay, could probably install one into a normal helmet... Hmmm, I got a old helmet which is under me bed due to being in a crash so not safe to use, so could try install a system and post it up on here... HMMMM, new project me thinks :D

If I remember correctly, the DAS are just 2 days to judge your riding to see if you are fit for the test, so you do day 1 and maybe have 3 or 4 days road riding if needed before your second day of das (which has your test in the evening almost every time, if not the morning after)

This is the route I took:

Did my CBT (was nervous, very nervous as I had never ridden on the roads)
theory
DAS1
DAS2 followed by test that eve which I failed
re took DAS2+test and passed.

So overall, I did 3 days on the 500cc.

Which, lets be honest, is nothing... Which is why I stress upon people to do road riding before taking the test.

Road riding also includes more complex roads rather than just test routes.

Used to ride all year round but not anymore :p
Rain riding aint so bad just slow down a bit and watch for drain cover's , the white lines on the road ect as these become like black ice

Thanks for all the info guys. Appreciated. I'm still adamant on the idea that I only want to ride a moped though, no point in really doing the CBT on a geared if I wont be riding a geared.

I'm still nervous about the whole thing though!
