CCNA Pay Bracket

Cisco corporate switches can go **** themselves :P I work primarily with 10Gbe Brocade switches for fast data networks.

Self study and experience > any qualification.

Networks really are not that complicated. They only go wrong when they are badly designed and/or messed with by somebody who doesn't understand them.

More likely to get a lot further with actual qualifications though..

That depends on who is hiring. A qualification is simple one organisation vouching to another organisation that a person is 'qualified'. Experience and a job reference is the exact same thing. The difference is, every educational establishment/qualification agency is itself a business designed to extract money from you. You 'pay' for them to vouch for you, rather than proving your worth yourself but doing good work for a business.

For that reason, I would rather hire an experienced professional, or at least somebody who can 'talk the talk' at interview, than a fresh faced university graduate with a slip of paper.

I agree with you if you're looking at internal IT. If you are a company that provides professional services then certifications are a great way to prove that you have at least tried to ensure the people working on your clients know what they are doing, to gain improved partner status with the vendor leading to better pricing, and to get easier access to support by skipping certain tiers.

If you are so confident that you know the products inside out then the minimal cost and time required to prove it with a certification shouldn't be an issue.

Right.........

But that is the problem, finding a good solid design.

I'm currently working on a design and validation of a DMVPN deployment with over 2500 spoke sites each with dual routers... so much to think about :(
