I am thinking of self studying it my self when I got the time. Coming to the end of my Computer Science degree now and specialising in distributed systems/security so as a long term career goal a CCIE would be good.

The 2500 series routers are also good to practice with.

Yeah i managed to test all the routing part of the CCNA syllabus with my 3 2503s, and am still using them a lot currently while studying for my CCNP.

Your cert is valid for 3 years but this only effects the highest level Cert. ie: if you do CCNA then CCNP, your CCNA is valid while your CCNP is. If you want to do CCNP after, get on it right away as you need a valid CCNA to even take a CCNP exam

Or to put it another way, each time you pass one of the Professional level exams, your CCNA is renewed.
