last night somebody stuck a cone on top of my new car that i only picked up on friday, with several things written on it, not threatening, but they knew my name and they wrote a phone number on it, i've tried phoneing it but no answer as of yet. so im looking to get CCTV equipment to be able to keep an eye on the carpark. will only need a couple of cameras and also the relevent recording equipment.

where from?

and how much?

cheers.

Anywhere really bud. B&Q do a range and you can get a decent one for as little as £40, maybe less. Any DIY store almost will get you started. They should hook up to a VHS video or I believe they can be linked to a PC so digital images can be recorded.

thing is it would like it to be constantly recording, well at least all through the night. so through the computer would use a lot of disk space? and not sure if VHS tapes are up for the job.

You don't want to be recording all night otherwise your hard disk will fill up pretty quickly.

Most the kits that connect up to your PC will have motion sensor software which starts recording when somebody comes into shot.

I am no expert in this field and I am sure someone with technical prowess will come in with far better advice, but I believe that images can be captured on hard disk in a compressed way and viewed nornally if needs be. How much space this takes I don't know, but anything captured could be burned onto working copy disc if needs be.

As for VHS, why would that not be suitable ?

( I may not get your message straight away, I am off out soon to watch the Toon play Liverpool. :))

Having perviously used video at my place of work. I can assure you that you can get vhs to record for 24 hrs but you need a special recorder to be able to do so. (The one i used at work had nomal, 12hrs and 24hrs recording.)

i went to the ideal home show last week and they had someone selling a kit..

3 or 4 cameras with a decoding box (to connect it to a tv) and a special video that records time lapse, (records something like 3 weeks on to a tape)

and the whole thing was only £200 i think

CCTV using PC software can be setup to only record when motion is detected, (mate has them in his shop) doesn't use much in way of disk space, and he has around 12 cameras for interior and exterior of building. lowish spec machine too, (old athlon with 512mb ram, and win2k)

Your other issue though, is that you mentioned a car park, ie public space, which you cannot use CCTV equipment in unless you are licenced, as it comes under the new SIA licences. if it was your driveway, it's a different story.

Alarm for the car sounds good, but as a hint, don't go for ultrasonic detectors, as their more prone to wind etc, (and air through vents) if you go for a microwave fitment (clifford / toad alarms both support this) you'll get less false alerts. It's also possible to get a pager unit fitted to the alarm which is supposed to be good for 3-500m depending on the buildings etc which might be a bit of peace of mind for you.

Ive found the details ...:

Am i allowed to post the information ??

4 cameras and processor £200
Time lapse video £ 199 (records up to 6 weeks on e24o video tape)

turns any tv in to quad surveillance system. see four cameras at the same time. zoom/freeze/ motion detection with audio alarm/ records date and time. built in microphones. etc..

Is there a chance it could be some of your pals having a wind up with you mate? Knowing you picked up a new motor and just yanking your chain to make you paranoid.

I suppose it is better to be safe than sorry though.

im guessing it is only a wind up, it wasnt threatening in any way, they knew my name, was decorated in ribbon and it had a tiara lol. but they've ripped the cone off of a traffic island just up the street, i think i know who it is but i cant be sure, i've rang the number written on it and it was some lassy called amanda, dont know anyone and she says she dont stay locally. just getting really annoyed, at least they aint damaged my car, ill get some pics uploaded.

Get yourself a web cam that has a motion detector on it :D My logitech has one fitted (or at least the software allows it to have this function) and I've tried to use it to find out which one of my 4 cats has taken to having a pee in the pc room :D Still haven't caught the buggers yet :p

Have a look at Cam Wizard. Has motion detection capabilities (only record/take images when motion is detected to save disk space), a range of video capture options, Email and FTP options and what looks like a nice user interface.

Buy one or two USB webcams (Can get a reasonable one for £15 these days), download the 45 day free trial and try it out :)
