CD-ROM driver problem

I am having some problems with my CD-ROM drive, which came with my new computer.
It wont detect any CD's at all and I can't see the drive in My Computer - the light flashes on the drive and it makes a noise, so I know the hardware is OK.
I went into device manager and I can see the CD drive, but it says there is a problem with the driver, it is either not installed or corrupt.
It says the driver version is: 5.1.2535.0
I have tried updating the driver over the net, but it can't find any updates and it can't find anything from Windows update either.

I have a CD which came with the computer which hopefully has the driver on it, but how on earth do I get it to work if the drive doesn't work!!!

I have tried to download the driver from the net but can't find it anywhere, a few sites have it but the download links don't work, or they foward me to windows update which can't find anything either.

I have found the error code on Windows which says the following:
Code 39
Windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware. The driver may be corrupted or missing. (Code 39)

Recommended resolution

Reasons for this error include a driver that is not present; a binary file that is corrupted; a file I/O problem, or a driver that references an entry point in another binary file that could not be loaded.

Uninstall the driver, and then click Scan for hardware changes to reinstall or upgrade the driver.

Ignoring the error for a second, is it detected in drive management?
Right click 'My Computer', Manage, Device Management.
If so it could be labelled as a letter already in use.
E.G. Hard drive is E:\ and the cd drive is also labelled as E:\
You can change the assigned letter and reboot the pc. Should pick it up.

If it isn't in there, I assume you've followed the error instructions and right clicked the drive in device manager, uninstall, and reboot?

It is in the device manager, thats how I found the error code. I tried uninstalling and restarted and it detected new hardware, etc but in device manager it has a yellow ! sign over the CDROM icon, I am sure it is a driver problem but I can't find the drivers ANYWHERE!
P.S) I can't see what drive it is labelled as, how do I find out?

Looks like we both got mixed up!

Here is what is in Disk managment.

sounds like a corrupt driver to me.

try typing this in the Start>Run box

SFC.exe /SCANNOW

that will run the system file checker and should replace the corrupt driver with one that works.
 
Hi,

I have run that and it got to around 50%, then said "Files that are required for Windows to run properly must be copied to the DLL cache.
Insert your Windows XP professional CD now.

However, my CD-ROM does not work, so what do I do?!

Is it possible to load the CD in a different computer, explore the contents and somehow find the driver manually?
 
I have already uninstalled that program, thanks for trying though.
I did go onto Dell's support website and put in my service tag, it has drivers for Removable Media Storage Devices but the one listed "TSST TS-L532B slim 8x DVD+/-RW" is a different model number to mine.

I did download the file anyway but it says it cannot detect a drive. :(

Google the error code you see on the driver page and that might give you the correct site with info.

I took your advice and searched the error code in google.com and found this thread on a different forum: http://sillydog.org/forum/sdt_9200-0-asc-0.php
I took their advice and deleted "lowerfilter" from the registry, disabled and enabled the device and it fired up and it's working now!
