Howzit Guys,

I've got a pc here from a friend who says his CD rom isn't working. A quick look under device manager shows there are no drivers for it...

Now this is a basic gerneric CD rom, no name ect. He is running Windows XP Professional. Doesn't even have service pack one on it.

I would load the service pack..but no cd drive...?

Any ideas guys?

Thanks!

check the cabling. both power and ide? also can you boot from cd? that would eliminate whether it's a hardware/software issue.

if it's working hardware wise, remove the ide controllers in device manager and reboot. windows should re-detect the controllers and all drives. :)

If the CD is on the same channel as the HD Check the Jumpers!... I know its obvious but I've missed it a few times!...

If its on its own channel then the IDE channel on the Mobo might be FUBAR... Set the CD to Slave and stick it on the same channel as the HD (set this to Master not CS) and boot up!... If it works the Mobo Socket is Mullered!

Sim :)
