I've got a Philips CDRW 5200 drive in my machine, and it's not recognising audio CDs.

I put the CD in, it spins up but doesn't autoplay, and doesn't register in explorer. I can click in the drive and it opens an empty folder (whereas other empty drives ask for a CD when you click on them).

Any ideas?

If you have a bootable cd/dvd you could try booting off it. It's an easy way to check if the drive is dead or if it's a software/driver issue.

If it boots from the bootable disk, try uninstalling the driver in device manager, then rebooting.

EDIT also, you mention it won't boot from audio cd's, but does it read any disk at all?

It reads data CDs fine. Just won't recognise audio CDs. Quite annoying, as my DVD drive is fairly old, and a lot slower at ripping my CD collection onto my new iPod!

[edit] Scratch that... It was reading data CDs fine yesterday, but now isn't. In fact, it's not doing anything at all. New drive time then, humph!
