I've been wearing cheap gear for a while and after some weight loss and the temp rising it's time to get rid of it. I was looking at the armour in the jacket and trousers just before washing it and it looks crap, cheap flimsy foam and weird markings I've only just become aware of the difference between the CE European safety mark and the CE China Export mark and I don't think mine are genuine, can't trust anyone.

So as I've just got some new gear and Kevlar jeans without any armour I'm thinking I might invest in some decent armour. I just wanted to know is armour generally interchangeable, assuming no accidents does it last or does it need replacing and which would you recommend?

I've never heard of armour needing replacing, can't see that you'd need to unless you come off. Even then, I don't think padding is like a helmet, i.e. it can take multiple impacts.

Can't really recommend though as I've always just kept in whatever the jacket or trousers comes with. I'd probably just go for something with decent ratings from sportsbikeshop

The inserts come in different shapes and sizes, if you can get D30 armour to fit your kit it's nice goes really soft when it warms up so you barely even know it's there but will turn solid on impact.

As far as I'm aware foam has to be replaced and I'd assume the hard foam in my jacket wouldn't be any good after an accident but then nor would the jacket.

Yeah that was the one I was planning on getting. A lot of jackets don't come with back protectors so it always seemed like a good idea to get one. Now I need knee protection and possibly hip. It all adds up so I'm hoping it's a worthwhile investment.

What jacket and jeans have you just bought? I always buy the brands armour to get the best fit and try to get CE2 back protector if they do one.
If that doesn't work for you then it may be best to go into a store and try out some different inserts to see what fits best.
Most are fine for multiple impacts but some back protectors may not be and will say in the details.

I replaced the standard back protectors in my jackets with D30 stuff. No idea if it's better but it's much more comfortable that's for sure.

I highly recommend D30 stuff, it's in all my kit. Crash tested too, my knees were 100% unmarked after my spill earlier this year. Brilliant stuff, comfy enough to wear for 12 hours on the bike too (800 miles over 2 days), you'd don't notice it's there in normal use, but it hardens up on impact.

I bought a Hein Gericke jacket and trousers but I'm not so worried about the armour in those. I have a pair of Bulletproof Kevlar jeans and that has no armour. I think I'll go for the D30 armour seems like it'll be worth it.

I was having a look around JTS biker clothing my localish clothing store & they had some armour cheap in bargain bins. I bought a new back piece & put that in with the one I already had, Tightened my leather jacket up nice again & I have double protection on my back, 2 Birds & all that.
