Is it just cache or is there more to it. I'm upgrading my laptop from a 2.0Ghz Celeron to a P4 of 2.2 or 2.4 depending what I can find and I was wondering what the actual difference in the chips is.
Also, the chip I've got in mine looks similar to this:

But there are some that look like this:

My question is: can the cover thing be taken off? If so, would it then look the same as the one in the top image. I only ask this because the cooler on my laptop seems to be designed for chips without the cover.

hope you can help

cheers

hmmm the chances of it working after the IHS is removed is prolly about 4 in 10 at the outside.

Also you are really gonna need a CPU designed for mobile use - dunno if the laptop makes uses of speed stepping, etc.

You will also have to be careful on heat output, the laptop cooler is most likely only able to cope with what came with the system as stock.

get a mobile p4 northwood ;) , cool, designed for laptops...
thats what I'm getting, there not that easy to find though, there are only a few on the bay and I'm not sure some of them are suitable.

OK, I had a 2.2Ghz Pentium 4-M C1 SL6J5 arrive today and so I installed it instantly. The problem is that the Laptop Motherboard will only run it at 1.2Ghz. It recognizes it in the bios as the correct CPU but will only run it at it's power saving speed (1.2Ghz). Anyone know why this would happen?

cheers

Hi parkie do you have Speedstep options in you bios?

Have a look/download this great program http://www.pbus-167.com/nhc/nhc.htm#anchor_download

Its an excellent tool for laptops, you can view your true cpu speed if it is running in power save mode you can set the program to performance mode and it boost your cpu to 100%

Have a look at the tutorial/faq to understand the features/how to change options etc.
