Celica .... a performance car?

how would a 94 2.0L Celica stack up against a MK3 3L Supra?

i know ... wierd question

the NA supra?

it would be faster, but its a lot heavier - it would be a better cruiser and have a nicer engine noise :)

But isn't the 2.0L Celica running the same GT engine that the MR2 has? (Twin Cam 16v) ?

Surely the MR2 would be a better option as it is lighter and rear wheel drive. In my experience they also handle very well. Stick a K&N on the twin cam engine, and it sounds gorgeous reving behind your head.

Are you sure your celica, whilst Im sure its nearly as powerful at the wheels, will handle as well "through the twisties" as a 4wd rally monster (even a standard one)?

i'd have to say it probably would (in the dry)

And Hate :p - indeed its a CCUK argument, but having been in similar situations myself i think its pretty accurate for a STANDARD GT4. Not from the lights, but 60 - 100 for example. And what of the redline (8.2krpm btw)? or waiting for lift ? Who waits for lift? Just drop down 2 gears and you're already into lift. Keep it planted through gear changes and you'll never leave lift - kinda like a supercharger :p

we've both had this discussion before, so we dont need to dredge it all up i'm sure, but when we calculate BHP/Kg we get:

GT4, kerb weight = 1440Kg (According to CCUK), your wheel HP = 197BHP
TSport, kerb weight = 1185Kg (According to CCUK), wheel HP (assuming ~8% loss) ~175BHP

GT4 = 0.137HP/Kg
TSport = 0.148HP/Kg

(using your weight above, we result in 0.146 HP/Kg)

How would the GT4 destroy it again? I concede from a start line the GT4 will win, and win, and win whatever the weather, wherever. But in a realworld scenario i think it would be much closer than people give credit to the TSport for. Problem arises in that there are so few standard GT4s about now - so tuneable :D

anways, back on topic :p

I'm with pug on this one, been there and done it, in a corolla t-sport of all things (same engine/drivetrain as a 190 celica) admittedly it was slightly modded with suspension and intake but there in the same area, and if your talking about st185 gt-fours well they used to get very small in the rear view mirror.

As for the celica being a performance car that going to be based entirely on your idea of what a performance car is. Most celica's are pretty soft, and you need to be looking at the likes of the late model ss-3 import or 190/t-sport and gt-fours to have anything that could be classed as a performance car the rest are just comfy and quickish.

Oh and an interesting link here for the weight of the st205 ;) just as well there so tuneable :p

i still maintain that the standard GT4 would be quicker, torque is what matters to get you moving.

i'd be inclined to agree it would be quicker, but it would be marginal... As well as torque to get you moving you need grip, again in the GT4s favour.

Just makes me chuckle when people see the GT4 as the only "quick" Celica, when in actuality the Gen7s are pretty close on their tails.

As for torque, what a stock GT4 pull then? TSport is 180nm @ 6800rpm

All i can see for a GT4 is 200ft/lb which is what, (1 ft/lb = 1.356 Nm) so 271Nm? gotta love blowers...

and ZG002, define kill? because it blatantly wouldnt. :p

I think an ST205 GT4 is closer to 300 Nm. But the idea that torque is what matters when you get moving is a lie. It is almost wholly power/weight until aerodynamics play an important part, from about 60 MPH onwards, then it starts to come down to absolute power.

it would lol... its better looking.. oooo like that one? :P

ya just sore cause ya spent loads of money on a gen 7 :(

im part of the celica club mate :P so take this in jest lol.. its an on going thing on there :p

but the gen 7 really is toyota gone soft im affraid...
