Ok,

I've made the decision to by myself a Gen6 Celica GT :)

I'm gonna try and pick up a post '96 model with the slight facelift.

Any recomendations on what i should be looking out for, or avoiding?

I've done a fair bit of research but i'm scared i may have missed out something important!

Thanks,

Gil.

Clutch changes are fairly expensive so thats one to watch out for if it has more than 70k miles. Superstrut suspension is expensive to replace if it has it. erm can't think of anything, and you think I should considering i own one lol.

My GT had faulty ABS when i got it, so i suppose make sure the ABS light actually works on the dash, otherwise they might have taken the bulb out. But thats just my experience when i got mine.

Oh just remembered, my rear suspension bushes where also gone, so listen for clunks from the rear when going over bumps.

Keep remembering stuff. The aerial motors are prone to break, and the whole aerial is a bit pricey from toyota. So if it doesn't go up and you like the radio you'll have to replace it. I never bothered.

Thanks for the reply.

How much are we talking for the clutch and aerial?

One thing i was wondering;

I did a tyre search on a few sites and they decided that the GT tyres needed to have a Z rating. Surely a V rating would be ok? Z rated tyres are very expensive!

What do you have on your GT?

£100 for the clucth, maybe £300 to fit it as the gearbox needs dropped to do it. I can't remember the price of the aerial from toyota, but im pretty sure it was over £60, you might be able to get one cheaper from tcb which are a toyota breakers. A second hand one might break again anyway, as the problem is due to a little plastic cog.

I have falken FK 452s on my celica, which are a Y rating. Don't see why you would need z?

You can sign up to either celica club or 6gc for some more support. 6gc has a lot of american forum memembers, and celica club requires a subscription for the main parts of the forum, so not perfect. There is also toyota owners club though.

If i were buying one id check the normal things in a car, check the radiator fluids, if they are really nasty and running low theres a good chance it hasn't really been taken care of in general. Check all electrics work (windows, mirrors, sunroof) don't be alaramed that the sunroof (if it has one) stops half way when closing, for some reason its supposed to do that. Check that its had a cambelt change too. If you get a test drive bring it to a hill, get up a little speed and put it in fifth, if it nearly stalls/struggles then the clutch is fine. If your revs get higher and your speed doesn't, its slipping.

Im struggling to think of things celica specific. Other that then ABS and clutch on mine, i've had no real problems. ABS sensors are £120 quid each from toyota, and near impossible to get 2nd hand, so definately get one with working ABS.

Very nice indeed.

I think i will be going for a black one, unless i find another colour that is too good not to buy.

Thanks for your help Cyborg. Much appreciated.

I had a celica about hmmm 4 years ago now..

The absolutely obvious thing to look out for is the suspension in the 80-90k stretch or so. You'd have to be a bit daft to buy one thats just coming up towards 80k really unless it was going for a very good price. They're cheaper to maintain that the gt4 is obviously and you never get the feeling a lot will go wrong.

I really enjoyed owning my one tbh.

Any reason the GT and not the GT4 ?

The only thing against the GT4 I can see are the expensive repairs of suspension components and servicing. Are they THAT much more expensive to run ? I haven't looked into them too deeply, but had a quick passing interest a while back before realising I need to do some saving :p

The GT just seems for a sports car.

Yes, the GT4 is a lot more expensive. Everything costs more, brakes, suspension, clutch etc. Plus you'll struggle to get much over 20mpg from a GT4. That and the majority of GT4s are imports which makes insurance a lot more than a GT

What he said!

Especially the super strut, costs over a grand to get replaced and needs doing every 60-80k apparently.

Insurance is something for me to consider also. Insurance cost for the GT4 would be too much for me to cope with.

The GT has 168 bhp @ 7000 rpm, 137 lbft @ 4800 rpm. Does 0-60 in 7.9sec with a top speed of 137mph - which will do me just fine i think :)

I'm actively looking for one now, so i should have one in a few weeks if something decent turns up.

Unless anyone comes up with a better idea? :p

Remember John's GT4? That thing constantly broke, it was quick the few days it worked though.

Another thing i remember about the celica was it actually got much better mpg than i initially expected on motorway journeys. Can't remember exactly how much but it must have been a fair bit over 30 thats for sure.

superstrut suspension is only available on the GT4(st205) and the import
ST202. so you dont need to worry about heavy repair bills with regards to suspension.

GT4's mpg can vary depends how heavy your right foot is.....:p

Nah i think your thinking of the more modern gen7 celica which is 140bhp and 190bhp. I'd probably own the gen7 190bhp one right now if i wasn't too tall to fit in it properly

Hmmm what bhp was the celica ST gen6 ?

Right, final decision time!

Celica GT 95/96/97 reg

or Pug 406 Coupe 98/99/2000 reg

I'm willing to spend £1.8k max!

Celica GT, more powerful engine. More reliable, more aggressive looks but for my price range would have to be an older Gen6 model.

Pug Coupe, pretty average 2.0 compared to the GT, looks cleaner/newer than the GT. Would be able to pick up a newer model for the money.

What would you guys go for? And why?

Cheers,

Gil.
