cell vs g80

cell is a cpu? and g80 is a gpu? or am i mistaken

like apples to oranges isn't it ?

You are indeed correct, to a point :p

The Cell was originally planned to be able to handle both at the same time, I believe it wasn't until later on in the PS3 development that Sony then decided to ditch that and go for a seperate GPU.

I think the article is suggesting that purely on GPU processing, the Cell is better at numbers than the G80 when running one of their tests

what a pointless test. The G80 is not designed to do ray-tracing at all. They might as well just be testing folding@home or photoshop speed or something.

A much fairer test would be the G80 doing standard rendering in OpenGL and the cell running a software driver for OpenGL.

The G80 would then destroy the cell.

yea so it can ratrace, but can it do that WHILST controlling AI, PHYSX and everything else the CPU looks after?

no.

Linux only gives 6 of the 8 SPE and no use of the GFX, so a proper game would have another 6 SPE and 3 gfx cards to use in this way potentially

IM pretty sure the PS4 will consist of 4 or more Cell BE (8 spu) clocked at higher speed than current ( IBM have had them running at 6 Ghz on the new 45nM die). The whole principle of the Cell is to link them with other cells (hence the name) as a multi processor with little or no bandwith problems. You can see how well the Cells work as a multi processor in IBMs roadrunner super computer which uses 16,000 Cell BE :eek:and 16,000 AMD Opteron
Cores which is supposed to reach a peak of 1.6 Petaflops ( thats more than all the computing power currently running F@H!)

The Cell is handling the "graphics" here, the G80 is irrelevant, redundant almost.

LOL @ Nickg, you obviously don't know how intensive Ray Tracing is.

So it takes only 2 of the PS3's 7 SPE's to comfortably beat the latest and greatest dedicated GPU at Raytracing, impressive.

The general purpose Opteron CPU is absolutely nowhere.

I thought that out of the 8 SPE's 1 is redundant and one is always reserved for the OS, restricting the actual number available to games to 6 per console.

lol this is all crap untill this starts to show what it can do in a d3d or open gl sence this is all media crap if the cell was so great it would be showing it now in games since the dev and games designers have had this console for over a year now and games still run pish on it ive had one and wasn't impressed at all yes blue ray is nice but doesn't mean its a good console

i could buy a blue ray drive for 130 for my pc and it would look a lot better than the ps3
so ure paying 270 quid for a games console that doesn't have any show and tell games out even after company's have had a long time working with this system and its been publicly sold for nearly a year kinnda says something about how wrong sony were for going with this!! its a nice idea but god its put to crap use!

Its not always redundant. The os wont take up an entire spe and I think some ps3 might be supplied with 8 spe or maybe IBM nicks all the good ones, who knows
