It's about resources and to a lesser extent jobs. The hose pipe ban we had has a lot to do with our huge population and why countries that are much hotter and dryer (but have a lot less people per square mile that we do) don't have the same problem.

That was all about the infrastructure, rather than the number of people in the country.

Immigration is a fantastic thing. However we need to have 3 things sorted. New properties being built, our underclass not growing, and immigrants to be the right people.

Immigration isn't the problem. It's uncontrolled immigration of low skilled migrants, rampant welfare abuse and the government propping up house prices that caused the problems.

Tower Hamlets +26% population increase since 2001!

That's not good especially in such a deprived area.

Manchester also +19% since 2001.

It's not very often you see some one have a sensible opinion on immigration.

I have absolutely no issue with immigration, what I can't stand however is when some one comes to England, doesn't bother to learn the language and then gets a job where they have to interact with the public (for example a bus driver) and can't because they don't speak English.

Asylum seekers are a different matter, as you can't reasonably expect them to have learnt English with the circumstances they had to enter England/UK.

No but you can ask them why they risked their life crossing the channel despite passing through numerous safe countries on the way.

If all countries treated asylum seekers the same, virtually none would come here. The fact so many do only highlights our over generous nature.

They risk their lives getting here.. yet don't want to stay in France, which last time I checked was a modern western country.. Asylum should be dealt with on a world scale, not left to the most naive countries to let them all in.

Disclaimer: I haven't seen France's asylum figures. So I could be wrong.

Would a similar increase in the next 10 years be sustainable given that we are going through a period of austerity?

It depends on what's fueling the growth. If it's mainly immigration of those aged 18-30 then that's much better than the population increasing through increased life expectancy.

If you think England's too crowded... move to Scotland.

Seriously, you get a free bus pass when you retire and your kids get free uni. And you'll have the warm fuzzy feeling of knowing that you freed up space in England for all those people crammed in there.

We need to think about how we control the population growth. More people = more pollution, more resources used, higher house prices, smaller new homes, more green space lost... :(

High population = bad.
