Central Heating - Have you turned off yet?

I have a Valiant 824 combi, & want more control over it, had a look at the Valiant VRC 470 - programmable room thermostat with weather compensation, but it only offers 3on/off per day.

I have the vaillant vrc 470f it does only have 3 ons and offs per day but if you use the thermostat control as well if it drops below a given temp it will switch on ,I cant see you needing more than 3 times a day also if its very cold out the outside sensor gives the combi a boost

I am using the valiant Exclusive 838 and its been very good

Thanks Richie, most likely discontinue now, most timers seem only 3 on/offs a day now.

This one does 6 per day - http://www.honeywelluk.com/Products...tats/Wireless-Programmable-Thermostats/CM927/

Features
Wireless communication between thermostat and receiver box - supplied pre-bound with 30M range
Auto, manual, holiday and off (frost) modes
Memory holds user programme even when batteries are changed
Extra large LCD display with user friendly Line of Text display
Up to six time/temperature settings per day
Synchronised boiler control in multi-zone systems for optimum efficiency
Boiler 'ON' display
Volt free connections
Automatic Summer/Winter time change
Energy saving TPI control (see FAQ TPI Control)

You can get a wired version as well if you want but probably easier with this wireless one.

TBH I only use 4 per day:

30 mins before I get up - 20oC
When I leave for work - 15oC
30 mins before I arrive home - 20oC
10pm at night - 15oC

The reason I need individual days is due to working late twice a week and having different work hours on each weekend day so the heating times are moved to take into account these days. On my day off, its set to 20oC all day.

Might be worth a look at the Heatmiser range of thermostats, they have various programmable ones and may well have one which does that many different time periods (I'm sure they did when I got one for my old flat a few years back - things may have changed of course).

Also, they look really nice and glow a lovely blue colour!!! :)

I am sure that will do what you want and can save on you gas with the thermostat and it gives you more control over you combi (depending on combi)

Can someone run me through the advantage of an external temp sensor? Surely if the heating is set to, say, 20oC then the heating will be on until the internal sensor reads 20oC inside the property.... Why should an external temp make this different?

the combi can use very little gas just to keep your house warm under normal conditions say 20% power if it gets colder outside it will give a boost up to 100% power to make sure theres no change off temp

if you read the link I posted it explains it miles better than me

what temperature do people accept as there `target temp` for keeping there houses at ?
our central heating we can change the temp as we wish, the wife feels the cold more than me most the time, but we also have 2 little ones aged 5 and 2 the youngest of which has had pneumonia at xmas and now suffers on and off with asthma as a direct result. we have to keep a decent heat or he suffers more at night and in the mornings. we aim usually for around the 19.5 minimum to 21 max depending on if the house feels cold. I find it odd that one day 19.5 can feel warm but another it feels cool so have to up the temps.

Turned mine off but the towels don't dry too well, so may put it on for an hour in the morning / afternoon. Wish it would stay DRY so could use the washing line properly.

Just switched to totally manual, still need the odd little bump but normally I have switched it off looooong before now!

Just checked my eon account and I've consumed 35% more gas than I had by this time last year!

Mine will be "on" all year as per others. Just have the thermostat set to 20-21c at times when i'm in and awake.
