I have a boiler and an imersion heater which gets topped up from the boiler with hot water.

I can turn the heating/water on independantly, but recently only with the water on when the timer switches on it is also heating up some of the radiators, which as you can gather makes the house a sauna when I walk in.

Whats the problem, the thermostat on the wall is on min its wierd.

ok its not a combi as you have a tank. Have you got a 3 port valve? The valve should shut the water supply off to the rads as this is opened by the room stat. Need my info

Ckeck and see if you have an in-direct cylinder in cupboard.
Your mid-position valve should be next to the cylinder, it has a little manual control on there, switch on heating and see if all 3 pipes get warm around the mid-position valve, if so then the valve is passing thru a supposedly closed port.
Ask someone to activate/de-activate the call for heating/hot water, then you can listen to the valve moving, if its crunchy sounding, then you may only have to replace the valve-head, then you wont need to drain down the system.

Good luck
Al

Is your programmer set to HEATING only or both heating/Hot water ?.

Just hot water on 2 timers morning and afternoon. I have just dug out british gas and have home care 300 which covers the whole central heating!

Thankyou for all your help

Did you do it yourself, or wimp out and get someone in? :)

Our 3 port valve seized up a couple of months ago, fortunately i'd still got the one that came with the motor when I had replaced the old controller (I'd left the existing valve in place and just bunged the motor on it).

I'll bet you they want to replace the whole system as it will be ''too old'' for them to get parts ;)

Diverter valve sounds like it is knackered. There should be a switch with 3 layers on it it to allow you to change is from auto to hot water to radiators.

Edit,

Just seen this one is from the dead! Thanks for the update.

I pay a premium to British gas who sort out anything like this. They did the whole thing took around 1.5 hours. All at thier expense. I would never try, firstly It would take me 2 days to convince the missus I knew what I was doing, and secondly I would prob mess it up, blow a few fuses and then cry. For anyone interested it costs around £20 a month for all this. When I moved into my house i discovered a leak in the bath. Dynorod part of BG sorted this all for free too.

3ports are easy enough to replace if you know what your doing. If not then get a plumber in ;)
For anyone whose interested if a 3port is passing 'heat' into the radiators then the whole valve needs replacing.
If the valve only does hot water then it'll be the synchron motor in the head. If the head itself gives any other strange behaviour, then its replacement time.
If the valve gets 'stuck' in a heating position then again its time to replace the whole valve.

Most valves nowadays and for a good few years have been 'universal':- Same fittings/threads and electrics. But there are still some different types about so check.

Plumbing lesson over :D
