I got this Centrino here and i didnt know what to do with it ? Are they good for anything specific ? Im not very good when it comes to CPU's so not sure if its worth keeping or not. I think its the 2.13 GHZ one.

They run cool so are they good for a media centre pc ?

Or should i just sell it and buy a new gadget for myself? :D
Thanks

Sorry its an Intel Centrino (which i guess is the same as Pentium Mobile).

2.13 GHZ
2MB Cache
533 FSB

Hope that helps. :)

No, Centrino isn't the name of a CPU - it's a standard. The CPU you have there is possibly a Pentium M or a Core Duo. Is there an S-code on it at all? It'll be a 5 character code starting with an S (hence the name ;)) They're good CPUs but the cost of a decent motherboard for it might make it an expensive project should you decide to do anything with it.

If you get the S-code you'll be able to determine what socket it is and then try to find an appropriate motherboard.

I left it at work, ill post the code tomorrow.

Im pretty sure its NOT a duo one, just a single core.

Looks like a Dothan probably a Pentium M 770. They were meant to be faster than AMD64 clock for clock and run very cool. A while back there were quite a few people puting these in desktop system via an adaptor as they could be overclocked to outperform anything produced for the desk top market.

When they came out they would have been seen as ideal for a media centre now most people would want a duel core CPU.

It would be faster but not that much faster probably around AMD64 4000 speed. Probably best selling it and putting the money towards a dual core system in the future.

For gaming they are terrific, works nicely in my, uh, competing-brand laptop with a 7800GTX ;). But geffen is probably right, if you need to build a whole new system around it you'd be better off selling it.

EDIT: Decent review here.
