Cern's Hydron Collider was to be tested November 26 2007. I cannot find any news on the net as to whether Cern have put the Atom Smasher to work...

Has anyone heard of information regarding this project. Did they start tests or has the project run into trouble?

Geneva, 7 November 2007. At a brief ceremony deep under the French countryside today, CERN1 Director General Robert Aymar sealed the last interconnect between the main magnet systems in the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). This is the latest milestone in commissioning the LHC, the world’s most powerful particle accelerator.

The LHC’s superconducting main magnets will operate at a temperature of just 1.9 degrees above absolute zero (–271.3°C), colder than outer space. To cool the magnets, over 10 000 tonnes of liquid nitrogen and 130 tonnes of liquid helium will be deployed through a cryogenic system including more than 40 000 leak-tight welds. Today’s ceremony marks the end of a two year programme of work to connect all the main dipole and quadrupole magnets in the LHC. This complex task included both electrical and fluid connections.

“This is a huge accomplishment,” said Lyn Evans, LHC project leader. “Now that it is done, we can concentrate on getting the machine cold and ready for physics.”

The LHC is a circular machine, 27 kilometres around and divided into eight sectors, each of which can be cooled down to its operating temperature of 1.9 degrees above absolute zero and powered-up individually. One sector was cooled down, powered and warmed up in the first half of 2007. This was an important learning process, allowing subsequent sectors to be tested more quickly.

“Over the coming months, we’ll be cooling down the remaining sectors,” said Evans. “Five sectors will be cooling by the end of 2007, with the remaining three joining them early next year.”

If all goes well, the first beams could be injected into the LHC in May 2008, and circulating beams established by June or July. With a project of this scale and complexity, however, the transition from construction to operation is a lengthy process.

“There is no big red button, and there are inevitably hurdles to be overcome as we bring the LHC into operation,” said Aymar, “Every part of the system has to be brought on stream carefully, with each sub-system and component tested and repaired if necessary.”

“There have been no show-stoppers so far,” added Evans. “For a machine of this complexity, things are going remarkably smoothly and we’re all looking forward to doing physics with the LHC next summer. If for any reason we have to warm up a sector, though,” he cautioned, “we’ll be looking at the end of summer rather than the beginning.”
 
I believe it to be a Large HADRON Collider and I think that everything was rescheduled owing to a crack or infrastructural instability in the magnets so the world hasn't ended yet.

I think the major problem was that this process could create miniature black holes inside the Earth (this would be a bad thing). However, they believe that Henderson's Radiation (Right name?) which exists in theory might be able to close them again when they do form.

Proper physicists are welcome to come along and correct me but I think I have it slightly right.
 
the chance of a dangerous singularity being formed by the LHC is roughly the same as the chance that dropping a pencil will cause it to turn into a diamond. technically possible, completely unlikeley.
 
Those of us in the distributed computing community have been smashing virtual atoms for a few years now. I guess we'll find out sometime next year whether we got the predictions right or caused the end of the world. :D
 
It was delayed till next year, due to it failing pressure testing. Solar rays have far higher enery levels than the lhc so the universe is not going to be destroyed.

I could be wrong, but I think it's Hawkings radiation that causes black holes to evaporate (in theory).

Is this the machine that will hopefully find the Higgs Boson (or not!)?

amongst other things. The discovery of the higgs boson would help prove string theory. Although personally I don't believe it.

or M theory and its branes :p

Sucked into a microscopic black hole

You will need: a microscopic black hole. Note that black holes are not eternal, they evaporate due to Hawking radiation. For your average black hole this takes an unimaginable amount of time, but for really small ones it could happen almost instantaneously, as evaporation time is dependent on mass. Therefore you microscopic black hole must have greater than a certain threshold mass, roughly equal to the mass of Mount Everest. Creating a microscopic black hole is tricky, since one needs a reasonable amount of neutronium, but may possibly be achievable by jamming large numbers of atomic nuclei together until they stick. This is left as an exercise to the reader.
Method: simply place your black hole on the surface of the Earth and wait. Black holes are of such high density that they pass through ordinary matter like a stone through the air. The black hole will plummet through the ground, eating its way to the center of the Earth and all the way through to the other side: then, it'll oscillate back, over and over like a matter-absorbing pendulum. Eventually it will come to rest at the core, having absorbed enough matter to slow it down. Then you just need to wait, while it sits and consumes matter until the whole Earth is gone.
Highly, highly unlikely. But not impossible.
Earth's final resting place: a singularity of almost zero size, which will then proceed to happily orbit the Sun as normal.
