CF file numbering and multiple bodies....

I've been musing over the best way to deal with this problem and thought I'd ask you guys what you do.

Now I have two bodies and 4 CF cards if I swap cards between the bodies with both set on continous numbering the numbering will of course follow on from the last one. This of course means I will soon lose track of how many shots each body has taken. Is there any better way than just dedicated a CF to a body and not to mix them?

I gave up a long time ago. I reset them both occasionally manually, but ultimately, who knows. It's total guesswork now

(doesn't really matter though, when the shutter dies the shutter dies. As for selling, it's impossible to tell afaik, so any quoted actuation figure would mean very little indeed).

I think i'll stick to dedicated cards to each body. It won't be long before I will need to change my CF cards anyhow; up to 12MB per RAW soon eats away at my 2GB cards. I'll keep one or two 2GB cards for my 30D and get two new 4GB cards for my 40D; that way it will be easy to keep the correct card on the correct body.

It's possible to tell the genuine shutter count from a RAW file, regardless of how many times it's rolled over 10k/been reset manually. Preview Extractor is one program that'll do it for you, for example.

It's worked with every Nikon body I've ever tried, I presumed the same was true of Canon bodies but I've never tried.

AFAIK you can't tell how many times a canon DSLR has been used. I spent quite a while looking for a way to tell, but gave up in the end. I'm not sure why you would go to the trouble of using dedicated memory cards in a camera just to keep check on the shutter count :confused:

, with the shutter supposedly lasting for 100,000 clicks it will be yeaaaars before you need to worry
