Apart from the biodegradable and non biodegradable type is there any difference between an expensive (Stihl or Bosch say) and stuff like no-nonsense from Screwfix that's about 1/3 the price.
Andi.

Not that I've ever found. We used to use burnt/old engine oil when doing it for a living.

Chainsaw Oil is a group I mineral base oil (typically a 220Cst viscosity) with anti fling additives to stop the oil going awol.
As most base oils are bought from the same handful of suppliers its a safe assumption to buy any brand, most even quote the same specs and approvals as they can if they source the same oils and additives.

However if its a pound for 20 litres its safe to say its either old stock or naff.

Rapeseed oil is what you need. Found as vegetable oil in Aldi etc for a lot cheaper than chainsaw oil. I wouldn't use it in colder weather without the saw and oil being warmed up first, but used it for years on all my saws without any issue. Asked at services and no issues reported, no gunge etc.

That comes from someone who only uses Aspen for fuel.
