Looking to go next month and am wondering whether to stay in Chamonix or Argentiere. Last time we went we stayed in Chamonix centre and spent a lot of time on the bus to all the outlying areas, although staying in the town centre was quite nice for convenience so i'm not sure which is better. There also seems to be a lot more cheaper apartments in Chamonix centre. Anyone stayed in Argentiere? If so is it better?

We're going as a group of 5 and spent so long waiting for buses last time I was thinking it may be cheaper (transfers) and quicker to hire a car at Geneva to get us to Cham and get us around the ski areas. Anyone done it? What is the parking like (price and availability)?

Finally, alternatively anyone know of any cheap transfer companies from Geneva to the Trois Vallee and either cheap apartments or hotels in any of the locales (preferably not Corchevel or Brides le bains due to them being a bit distant from the main slopes)?

:)

When I went skiing a few years back, we stayed in Les Gets, which is a bit further away. IIRC we used the train when we went to Chamonix and there were quite a few skiiers using it to get from A to B.

Went to Chamonix last August, it was stunning. We stayed right in the centre. As you say, you can get around locally (down the valley) easy, especially with the train pass.

Couple of pics to tease below :D was about 30c.

Doesn't look very snowy compared to when i was there in 2001 or 2002.

Chamonix is great, if you want to do it well you'll spend a fortune.

Worth it though. Thats where I learned to ski. :)

Went to Les Gets a couple of years ago (well Morzine), problem is the areas all over the place and not brilliant IMO. :)

I don't remember there being a Train, is that included in the lift passes?

I'd prefer not to spend a fortune tbh :p. At the moment it's totting up as £500 for a week inc. lift pass which is pretty good skiing (no lessons and have own skis etc.). TBH as long as the bed is warm I don't really care about anything but the skiing. :D

I stayed here: www.hotel-deslacs-chamonix.com

Cheap, clean and friendly. If you just want a bed (and breakfast) it's pretty perfect, bus stop 30 seconds walk away and the popular hotel next door has a ski shop where I got my boots and skis from. You can also tag onto the other hotel's shuttle buses.

I stayed in Les Houches at the end of the summer season in 2008 - is that end of the valley an option?

The big underground car parks in the centre of Chamonix were fine but I suspect they would be a lot busier in the winter.

http://www.3vt.co.uk/ is run by an old friend of mine and they can do shared transfers now - might be worth speaking to them.

I stayed in a Chalet in Argentiere, just hopped on the bus in the morning up to the top of the valley. Was quick & easy :)

..but if you stay in Cham itself you get to spend all afternoon / evening in Chambre Neuf - best apres ever!

An going with my family so nightlife isn't the most important thing. :p

Thanks for the replys guys. :)

Thanks for the link but it's a little pricey (we're looking at an apartment for 4 for €750 per week). Looks nice though, an a hot tub is always good. :D

No worries. The only bad thing about a hot tub is having to get out and leg it to the shower before you freeze your nuts off!
