change from rar file

I changed the name of a file to blah.rar and now I cant change the file type back to txt, as it stays as a rar file.

anyone know how to change the file type in windows 7?

sorry to state the obvious, but have you right clicked on file and chose open with, then winrar?

"To set File Associations in Windows 7 or Vista, Open Control Panel > Control Panel Home > Default Programs > Set Associations. Select a file type in the list and click Change Program."

thanks for that, even when I change the file associations the file remains as a rar file - i dont want it to be a rar file. I dont want to change what opens it I want to change its *.???

got it sorted, did it via the CMD prompt - thanks for the ideas.

For future ref:

Control panel > Folder options > View Tab > untick 'Hide extensions for known file types'

I assume you have tried renameing it back to .txt and it hasn't worked, so try this:

Go tto Control Panel then Folder Options. Select the View tab, and find where it says "Hide extensions for known file types" and make sure the box is unchecked.

Try renaming the file from blah.rar back to blah.txt
