Change in posting style

I'm not a motors man however having read some of your posts they do come off as a tad arrogant and do annoy me. Sure I own a Corsa and it *may* be the worst car in the world, but there are ways of saying it that don't make me feel like a complete arse that makes me go on the defensive. I'm sure that goes for others here.

I know from experience of being the type of person who doesn't believe in sugar coating things that it can bring a negative response. Sure you may know everything about the subject but there are ways of making people see your point of view. You can't just flat out tell people the truth. I've had many arguments with friends and I've had many arguments in my head after. I've spent years trying to get people to see my point of view believing that if I could only say the right word they'd get it but they just don't and sometimes you just have to let it go. You'll find there are always trolls and they will always find a way to have a go at you. You can only do one thing and thats to ignore them.

I can see why you're posting this thread as its to get this forum back to a motors forum and not a BMW fanboy / anti-fanboy forum. If you feel that you personally need to evaluate the way you tackle things then by all means have a think. I've been there, it has helped and I do feel less "MY WAY!!!!" these days but ya know every so often its easy to have a relapse :)

You know your stuff, just sugar coat it a little now and then and I'm sure people will appreciate your knowledge more. :)

He isnt saying that it is fact that they are complete rubbish that is his opinion but I own one and also think they are pretty rubbish, they are no where near the best car for the money:p
 
Hey fox,

I for one have enjoyed all of your posts, you tell the truth bluntly and don't always tell people what they want to hear. I've never really disagreed with anything you've ever said, even though i don't post here much.

Some people need to learn to take what they give on here.

For the greater good of the motors forum i hope you do not change your posting style.

Although most of you think im new here, i have been here for about a year and a half i just never had a valid email tor register with.

I have found it to be mainly the new people who start up a fuss over your posts where as the older members accept what you have to say.

Once again i hope you do continue to post in your controversial and truthful manner :)

perhaps not, or more likely not the best car for the money FOR YOU!.

however, neither of these options mean that that particular car is the worst car in the world.

For the money you could get a nice clio or even better a mondeo:p but for what you get with the corsa it isnt the best car for quite a lot of people in my opinion.

I didnt say that the car was the worst in the world but in my opinion it is far from the best car in the world.

i know you didn't my friend, and in truth i'm well aware that it's not even the leader of it's class.

however certain vehicles are constantly called "awful" and "worst car EVER" on here and this simply isn't true.
there are NO bad card available brand new.there's good and there's better.

If you could prove that without a shadow of a doubt then you would be justified in that response but unless your car is from 1910 I doubt thats really true. Constructive criticism rather than being brutally honest is a much nicer way of getting people to respect your opinion imho.
 
From my point of view, its not so much what you say Fox, but the way you say it. Most of your posts are helpful and interesting, but sometimes the 'tone' of what you're saying comes across as a bit condescending. Its comments along the lines of 'Oh dear, you bought a Corsa' that tend to get peoples backs up - now Corsas might not be all that good, and you rarely make such a statement without backing it up with facts, but sometimes its the forthright way in which you say these things that gets peoples backs up.

In 'the real world' if someone you didn't know spent £8k on a brand new Corsa would you go 'oh dear' and tell them they'd wasted their money? Or smile and nod (even if you thought they had wasted their money)?

Now I'm not suggesting you do the latter - this is after all a discussion forum. But just because this is a forum doesn't mean people don't take offence - whether they should do or not, its clear that they do, and from this thread its also clear the snipes they make at you in response are getting to you.

People talk about 'sugar coating' your posts, well I wouldn't go as far as to say thats needed, but theres ways of saying things that convey your opinion just as well without the tone of disappointment or condescion. Now I've been reading these forums a long time (since 2000 actually) and I don't post enough to be really noticed as one of the regulars, and when I read a post by you I know its meant in a helpful and genuine way, but to some the tone comes across as condescending, whether you mean it or not.

Nobody is suggesting you stop posting negative opinions on cars, but when somebodys spent a lot of money they're defensive of their purchase, its human nature, and are going to find a post starting with 'oh dear, you went and bought that?' or such like a bit off. There's a time and a place for giving advice, and a way in which to word things - yes, its a discussion forum, and maybe some people need to be thicker skinned, but theres a big difference between 'its a forum so I'll say whatever I damn well think' and only posting positive comments!

I hope that you stay around because you're helpful and enthusiastic, but consider how people (particularly strangers/newbies to the forum) may take some of your comments as a personal dig even when (evidently, to me and many of the regulars) thats not the spirit in which they're intended.

I thought it was because he was lifting news and articles straight from the Autosport site without crediting them, added to which Autosport was a subscription-only site at the time and he was pasting premium content.

Now I find some of your posts quite informative.

Pretty much anything. I used to regularly get death threats from spotty fourteen year olds when I was part of the admin team for a large CounterStrike league back in the early days of the game.

Oddly enough, on confronting the culprits at the LANs at which they'd threatened to stab me, they'd usually come over mute and unable to look at me.
