Change my win 7 and bios to AHCI or complete reinstall of OS ?

I for some reason installed windows 7 on my Crucial SSD with the Bios set in ATA mode.

I have found that i can change the OS reboot and then change the bios if i just change it in the bios i get a BSOD.

I want to update my SSD firmware and enable TRIM.

is this safe ? or should i just backup and re-install?

I changed mine in the OS and then rebooted and changed the BIOS setting and it's been working no problem.

Updating your FW will wipe the drive.
