I recently ported my old number from my previous service provider onto a different phone / provider running Android 4.04 (Galaxy Note)

I can't seem change to the new number in Settings / Status / Phone Number. I did see some mention of inserting SIM into an iPhone or Blackberry and doing it that way but I do not have access to either of these phones.

Is there any way of doing this without rooting?

Not much use to you as you don't want to root but certain ROMs like CM10 allow you to change the phone number.
Mine was wrong until I installed CM10 then I had the option to change it and now I'm back on another ROM the correct number is still displayed in the phone information screen.

I searched high and low for an answer that works and I was stuck.
It doesn't work in an iPhone 4S, but did work for me in a Blackberry - just needed to find someone with an unlocked Blackberry for it to work.

I also have this problem on my galaxy S3 - After transferring my old PAYG number onto my new contract, this still displays the original contract number.

If you have an iPhone to hand or an old nokia, pop your sim in that and change the number via that. If you're rooted the above app might work, though it is a bit hit and miss.
