Change to storage - Advice Needed!!

Hello,

I’m currently running an OCZ-Vertex 2 60gb as my OS drive and a 1TB Samsung Spinpoint f3 as my secondary drive which contains all my games & programs.

I’ve been considering changing to x2 600gb velociraptor drives running RAID 1 but I’m not sure if there is a better setup I should be looking at.

I’m currently running:
• Gigabyte 990XA-UD3
• AMD FX 6100
• 8GB Corsair Dominator 1600
• MSI Geforce 660 GTX TwinFrozr III
• 1000w Modular PSU

I like the idea of the raptor drives as they are fast & efficient and will not spend the money to have SSD’s instead. My boot time is about 15-20 seconds on my SSD and I would like to keep the speed, hence the raptors. I’ve read that the WD Black/Blue/Green are a good choice, but I don’t know what the speeds are like. Would it be better to run 2x 1.5/2tb drives in RAID 1over 2 raptors at 600gb each?

I would also like some recommendations as to a decent but cheap RAID Controller if you can help.

I'd keep using SSD, What you could do here..

Buy a fast SSD for Windows, use the 60GB as a Games drive (only install games you're playing)

Personally, I'd never bother with velociraptors now, SSD's keep getting cheaper and faster

Do you think I should look at replacing my OCZ-Vertex2? I know it's only for games (Steam) and most is stored on cloud anyway.

Also, what Samsung would be reccomended?

Well it depends what you want, I'm happy with a 64gb drive (crucial m4), and I have a vertex 2 120gb as my Steam drive for games. Then a WD blue 640gb hard drive for my data.

With a 256GB SSD, you wouldn't need to put your games/programs on another drive, and they're super fast!

You don't need norton ghost do you? the bare drive will save you a few quid.

Thanks to you both! Not sure which route I'll take at the moment. Love the idea of the 256 SSD, but worried about running out of space. I guess I'll have to only install the programs I'm using. It's mostley IE, Chrome, FireFox, Adobe Lightrooms v3 & Office.

All my other programs are pretty much redundant as they are only installed for the off chance I may need them. Turns out I dont think I do.

Also, funds are limited and I've got a £85 voucher for CEX. I've been looking at the OCZ Vertex 3 120gb or a Corsair F120.

Any comments/experiences?
