Change USB boot order?

Hi folks,

Is it possible to change the order that external USB devices like mice, keyboards etc are loaded by windows when booting up? My keyboard and mouse seem to be the very last things that get loaded so it takes a good extra 30 seconds before I can type my password in and log in.

I've tried rearranging the ports but no luck there.

Any ideas?

Cheers,

USB devices should have initialised before you get the login screen. I would suggest you're having other problems!

eek. doesnt sound good. :/ yeh it's a weird one. i mean the USB keyboard does work during POST. it's as if it turns itself off again after POST and while win loads... strange eh?

The USB controller is initialised as part of the POST to enable the keyboard etc to work during boot. It is then shut down as Windows starts to load, but then re-initialised as Windows loads the controller drivers. (I'm sure that the technical wording of that is wrong, however it should give you a jist of what happens)

Certainly before you change from the Windows load screen to the Welcome screen the USB controller and all devices should have initialised.

EDIT - What mouse and keyboard do you have?

so most likely is that i've got something iffy plugged in that's taking way too long to initialise? maybe a printer on a long extension cable or my wacom tablet or something. i guess the best way to find out is to remove everything except mouse and keyboard and see if that fixes it, then one by one start adding stuff.

cheers,

That would certainly sound like a good plan, although in my experience a slow device usually holds Windows on a black screen between the loading and Welcome screens until it has fully started.

Worth a shot though for sure.
