Hey guys,

My first post on the forum :).

I've a desktop pc that my mum had built for me about 4/5years ago whilst i was at school.

I'm looking at building a system in the coming months after I've had my holiday and i was wondering what the chances are that i would be able to re-use the existing case?

If you need any details of the pc just ask and I will try my best. Please bear in mind this would be the first PC I've ever built so going to be a challenge :).

Thanks Simon

Need to know a little more first I guess.

1) What is the case
2) Do you need help selecting computer parts
3) If yes to 2, what is your budget

Sorry it's the best picture i can take. It's a QDI motherboard?

Well if you could give me a starting point it would be appreciated. I'd be spending £5/600.

Thanks :)

Hello and welcome to the forum :)

Looks like a std ATX case which be able to take most boards.

I would also look at a new PSU, do you have a budget?

Of yeah i definitely want to upgrade from the Pentium 4!

Erm i'd like to spend no more than £600 really.

Just a general PC for doing work/excel on and occasion AutoCAD.

I probably will as i can't find my Windows 7 disk!

You don't really need the disk, so long as you have your product key you can find lots of ISOs online for creating a bootable USB pen.

You can download a version from Microsoft then either copy it to a USB stick or DVD and install from that.

Edit: Do you just need the tower or do you also need peripherals?

Well I've already a monitor, keyboard etc that I can use. If I could get away with using the case to save some cash it would be good :)

6850 is cheaper if you need GPU, and roughly same performance as GTX460. Autocad may prefer NVidia (dunno for sure). Consider pro options like Quadro 400 as well, if you're into CAD work.

Thanks guys, could you give me a starters as how to choose motherboard/processors please?

On another note i manager to overclock the pentium 4 processor in the PC, from 1.7Ghz to 2.1Ghz :). Turns out the PC was built circa 2003 so coming out 9years old!

Really you want a i5 3570K, So you can overclock it.

You also want a Z77 Chipset motherboard either MSI or Gigabyte as they have 3 year warranties and UK RMA.
