Changing back ground

I would like to rasterbator this photo, but I need to change the back ground to white only. The grey does not look good when rasterbated.
Is there anyway to do it without making the photo look awful, as all my attempts have done.

If you have PS use curves or levels

levels tool in ps + dodge & burn on the branches in 1st pic.

It the large res one. The second version you did look the best.
Can I do that on a free version of ps?

Deanolfc did a great job making the photo white rather than grey, but can someone do it with the 1920x1080 photo found here?
