The BIOS is like a teeny bit of basic software on a chip that is the first thing to kick in when you press the power button. It is responsible for looking around the hardware, detecting what you have and starting them all running (very basically put) and is. Manufacturers cannot build in compatibility for all hardware changes that might take place (e.g. single core 32bit to multicore 64bit), but can do so at a later date. To ensure your PC recognises the hardware properly and knows things like what voltages to set, you sometimes need to update the BIOS in your PC. This is usually fairly straightforward, with most mobo manufacturers providing files you can drop on bootable floppies and instructions.
