Hi I recently finished a fresh install of windows but my drive names are messed up for some reason.

My C drive is now H and my dvd drive is now I. Is there an easy way to change them back and if so will it mess up the filepath of the programs I have just installed ?

Cheers

No, unfortunately you can't change the system drive's letter, even through disk management. You'll have to reinstall I'm afraid.

Did you have anything plugged in such as a USB card reader or similar? Any other hard drives? If so, it might be an idea to disconnect them first, just to be sure.

I had fun with this recently. I had an empty 5gb fat32 partition that it insisted on naming c:\ during install to a different partition, at the start of the drive too. It then refused to boot from the ntfs partition it made because it wasn't labelled c:\. Took me a while to work that one out, it behaved itself after I deleted the fat32 one.

Always unplug absolutely every hard drive and usb stick before installing windows. It just isn't worth the time fixing the mess it makes of the mbr of drives it should have nothing to do with. Cursed os. Yep, youre going to reinstall. For when things like this push you too far, theres always linux
